“Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla Saad is the latest selection for the Atkins Library Book Club; the library will hold a virtual discussion of the work from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26 via Google Meets. Members of the UNC Charlotte community who are interested in participating can get free access to the book through the library’s online catalog.
The Atkins Library Book Club focuses on diversity and cultural topics to spark conversations around equity and inclusion as well as an awareness of human differences embedded in society and culture. Originally part of the Atkins Library Self-Selected Group Development, this book club is open to all faculty, staff and students.
“Me and White Supremacy” teaches readers how to dismantle the privilege within themselves so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on people of color, and in turn, help other white people do better, too. Originally published in 2019, the updated and expanded “Me and White Supremacy” takes the work deeper by adding more historical and cultural contexts, sharing moving stories and anecdotes, and including expanded definitions, examples, and further resources.
Ryan Harris, head of Research and Instructional Services, and Denelle Eads, employee relations and staff development librarian, will co-facilitate the Aug. 26 discussion. The Atkins Library Diversity and Inclusion Committee sponsors this event but welcomes participation from faculty, staff, and students across campus to lead book discussions and to make book recommendations.
