Student dancers will perform four contemporary works, including a selection from “Walking with Pearl…Africa Diaries,” during the Spring Dance Concert, set for Thursday, March 21, through Sunday, March 24, in the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. Vladimir Alexandrov, the author of “The Black Russian,” will speak at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, in the Fretwell Building, Room 100. In his talk, he will tell the story of Frederick Bruce Thomas, the son of former slaves in Mississippi who became a famous impresario in pre-revolutionary Moscow and the “sultan of jazz” in Constantinople.
“Diverse Faces, Linked Destiny," a collection of woodcarvings by Kasali Akangbe, the 2012 Africana Artist-in-Residence, will open Tuesday, March 12, in the Garinger Building, Room 113. A reception honoring the event will be from 2 to 5 p.m.
The Office of University Communications, in collaboration with the Graduate School, has officially launched a new University graduate education marketing campaign - Even Higher Education. Primarily a brand and awareness campaign, Even Higher Education is designed to raise the visibility of UNC Charlotte’s graduate offerings in the increasingly competitive Charlotte market.
Michael Barrett, deputy general counsel to the governor of Missouri, will give a presentation at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, in the Student Union, Room 340I.
Barrett, a 1996 graduate of UNC Charlotte, is the author of “The Keeler Principle.” Published in 2009, the novel is based in part on a class he took as an undergraduate.
The 13th annual Graduate Student Research Symposium will be Saturday, March 23, in Atkins Library. Participants will vie for more than $7,000 in cash prizes with awards presented in multiple research categories that honor the work of University graduate students.
The Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City is displaying “Favelas: Architecture of Survival,” which features 48 large-format photographs by Brazilian photographer Pedro Lobo.
