New Mexico researcher to discuss ICAP model of active learning

Gary Smith, a researcher at the University of New Mexico, will deliver the virtual presentation, “Discover Active Learning Methods that Transfer Research to Practice” at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 6. The Center for Teaching and Learning and its Active Learning Academy are sponsoring this event.

During his presentation, Smith will use examples to demonstrate ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive), a relatively new model for designing learning activities and monitoring learners’ behaviors to facilitate success.

Smith has directed educational development and professional development programs at the University of New Mexico since 2006. In 2019, he oversaw the combination of the School of Medicine programs in educational development and continuing medical education for physicians to form the Office for Continuous Professional Learning, where he is the associate dean. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and books in the disciplines of geoscience, scholarship of teaching and learning and the scholarship of professional learning and development.
