Edward Stokes ’81, ’84 M.S.E., a professor of electrical and computer engineering in the William States Lee College of Engineering, died Saturday, Aug. 21.
Stokes, who earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and mechanical engineering and engineering science and a master’s in mechanical engineering and engineering science from UNC Charlotte, completed a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He returned to the University in 2002 as an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering following 16 years as a staff scientist with General Electric’s Global Research Center. He also co-founded Dot Metrics Technology and served as a technical consultant with the company from 2003 to 2015. He was promoted to full professor in 2011.
Rob Keynton, Lee College dean, and Asis Nasipuri, chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, in an email to college faculty and staff, stated, “Ed was a highly respected teacher, researcher, mentor, entrepreneur, musician and family man. He has been associated with UNC Charlotte since the 1970s, first as a student, and then as a faculty member. He touched a lot of hearts.”
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg.
