Josh Englund, coordinator of student and young alumni engagement, is all around campus, and his goal is to make every student experience at Charlotte the best it can be. Learn more about him and how to get involved at UNC Charlotte.

Describe your job and what you do at UNC Charlotte.

My job is to help students and young alumni feel connected to Charlotte and to increase their school spirit, pride and love for their alma mater. We believe that once you step foot on campus, you are a member of Niner Nation for life and that your journey as alumni starts right away. In my role, I have the pleasure of serving as an advisor for several different groups that help create amazing experiences for our students and young alumni (defined as graduates of the last 10 years), including the Student Ambassadors, Student Alumni Association and the Young Alumni Chapter. We are here to help you find your passion and purpose while inspiring lifelong relationships with the University. Our goal is to make your experience with Charlotte the best it can be.

What’s your favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte? What about your favorite part of the job?

What I love most about being a part of this community is the people. Everyone, from our students to our faculty and staff to the community members who support us, are all-in on Charlotte. Anyone who steps foot on campus can feel that there is something different about this place. I have built so many friendships and connections over the years, and I am so grateful for the support I’ve received.

It’s no surprise then that my favorite part of my job is the students and alumni I work with on a daily basis. They keep me going when I’m having a tough moment, inspire me with their passion and drive and have truly helped me fall in love with this school.

What is something you’re most excited about for the fall semester?

Seeing people back on campus. It’s been quiet for the past year and getting to interact with students and campus community members I haven’t seen in over a year is something I will not take for granted. There’s such a positive vibe that permeates campus when we have folks here — it really brings you a sense of pride and spirit that just can’t be replicated.

When you’re not on campus, what are some things you do in your free time?

I love spending time with my family — we have two young children that bring my wife and I the greatest joy in the world. I also love to catch up with friends, check out a local brewery, go golfing and watch basically any sport you put in front of me.

What’s a place on campus you think every student should visit?

The Harris Alumni Center, of course! Truly though, one of my favorite views is from the front of the SAC (Barnhardt Student Activity Center), looking out over CHHS/COED quad toward the Popp Martin Student Union. When the flowers are in bloom, it is one of the most picturesque views on campus.

What piece of advice would you give to a new student?

Get involved! There’s truly something for everyone on this campus and getting involved early can help you get connected to campus, network, find job opportunities and so much more. Getting ready for life after graduation can be daunting, but we have so many resources on campus to help you prepare for your next steps as 49er alumni!
