Meet Amy Hisler, UNC Charlotte’s controller. Learn about her role, her favorite areas of campus and her advice for students.

Describe your job and what you do at UNC Charlotte

As the controller, I oversee several departments that are responsible for providing business support and oversight for accounting, disbursements, financial reporting, fixed assets, payroll, tax, vendor relations and our purchasing card program. My favorite part of the job is the problem solving we get to do in all of the areas I manage. Every day a new puzzle presents itself for my team, and I to work through to help improve the work that we do with our campus partners and for our customers.

What’s something about your job that most people don’t know

I was part of the IMT team that coordinated and managed the University's COVID-19 response. Our office was immediately engaged with the team when the University thought one of our biggest challenges would be getting all of our students, faculty and staff back to Charlotte. It was impressive to witness the planning, adapting and course correcting the team managed quickly and adeptly to adjust to the shifting landscape that COVID-19 created over the last two years.

What’s your favorite part about being at UNC Charlotte

The best thing about being a part of the UNC Charlotte campus is the work family that I get to interact with on a daily basis. I get to work with a dedicated team both in the Controller's Office and across campus, who all have the same goal of providing a quality educational experience for our students.

What about your favorite part of the job

My favorite part of the job is the problem solving we get to do in all of the areas I manage. Every day a new puzzle presents itself for my team and I to work through to help improve the work that we do with our campus partners and for our customers.

When you’re not on campus, what are some things you do in your free time

My family has season tickets for Charlotte FC. I love getting out and finding great concerts for entertainment (Billy Joel and NKOTB are on the agenda in the coming months). I also enjoy a good round of team trivia or music bingo at one of our neighborhood restaurants.

What’s a place on campus you think every student should visit

SoVi for dining and the athletic facilities to take in a game. As a former college student-athlete, nothing was more exciting than having my classmates show up to support me. You won't look back and regret going to a game, especially if you get the chance to witness something that becomes a SportsCenter Top 10 highlight in person.

What piece of advice would you give to a new student

A campus as large as UNC Charlotte can be overwhelming at times. Find a great core group of friends, find yourself (or at least start to) and let your curiosities and passions lead you to a career path. You'll spend the next (and largest) phase of your life doing the job you are studying and working toward now — make sure you can enjoy it. And if you don't enjoy it, don't be afraid to redraw your path, even if it means starting over from where you thought you were headed. Lastly, use the vast resources that a campus filled with more than 30,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff can provide to help you become the person you want to be.
