UNC Charlotte will celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Student Union, Room 340.
This annual event includes historical and cultural information as well as a recognition ceremony to honor faculty, staff and students who have been nominated for their impact on the lives of women locally and globally.
The 2013 first quarter edition of the UNC Charlotte magazine includes an article on the prospect of aging well – an issue of importance to many. In this cover story, research by faculty and students illustrate how individuals can avoid aging poorly.
Faculty and staff members are invited to join colleagues for socializing and networking at the next Faculty and Staff Social, which will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Student Union Art Gallery, located on the first floor. Sponsored by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, the social will feature light hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and soft drinks.
Ray Kea, professor of history at the University of California at Riverside, will present “Crossroads of Civilization: The Greater Sahara in the World History” at 5 p.m., Monday, March 25, in Denny Building, Room 200.
The J. Murrey Atkins Library will host its Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, April 19. This conference is a University-wide showcase of research projects being completed by undergraduates from all levels and from all colleges/departments at UNC Charlotte. The deadline for undergraduates to enter the competition is Monday, April 1.
The Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team will host the Davidson College Wildcats at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 24, in Halton Arena, for the second round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

The UNC Charlotte Iranian Student Organization will hold its Sizdah Bedar (spring picnic) celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 30, at Reedy Creek Park, Shelter No. 4.
Sizdah Bedar is a ceremony in the Persian culture. It is held on the 13 day of spring, which is also the13th day of the first month of the Persian New Year (Farfardeen).
Between Monday and Thursday, March 25-28, UNC Charlotte will host a team of peer reviewers from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This Onsite Review Committee will visit the campus to focus on the University’s proposed Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) titled “Prospect for Success.”
Scott Klemmer, an associate professor at Stanford University, will present “Teaching a Massive Open Online Class (MOOC) with Peer and Self Assessment” at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 161.
UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said today he supports UNC system Pres. Tom Ross’ recent statement on the state budget proposed by Gov. Pat McCrory.
Scholar, policy maker and author Diane Ravitch spoke about the precarious future of public education in North Carolina at UNC Charlotte Center City Wednesday night. Her speech at the TIAA-CREF Lecture was titled “The Death and Life of the Great American School System.”
Earlier Wednesday, she led a community conversation on the same topic on the main campus.
