University to observe Campus Sustainability Week

This year’s Campus Sustainability Week is Oct. 2-8. This annual observance engages the University community in sustainable practices on campus through events and volunteer opportunities.

This year’s Campus Sustainability Week is Oct. 2-8. This annual observance engages the University community in sustainable practices on campus through events and volunteer opportunities. Three traditional events, all outdoors, are returning this year, along with some new ones.

Walking Tour of Charlotte Green Initiative Projects
Monday, Oct. 3, 10 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m.
Front of Smith Building
Participate in a short tour of sustainability related projects funded by the Charlotte Green Initiative, the student green fund. Register here

Campus Tree Planting  
Tuesday, Oct. 4, 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Between Martin Hall and Lot 5
Fall is tree planting time in Charlotte! Facilities Management Grounds Department staff will be on hand to help instruct you on the proper way to plant a tree to ensure its survival and help grow the tree canopy on campus. Register here.

Student Gathering  
Tuesday, Oct. 4, 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Outside Porch of Popp Martin Student Union
Learn about the work of the Charlotte Green Initiative, the student green fund and the projects the organization funds, to help brainstorm proposals for the committee to vote on. There will be pizza, soda and planned activities throughout the event. Register here

Midterms Don't Have to be Succulent
Tuesday, Oct. 4, 6 to 7 p.m.
Belk Hall
Plant a succulent and learn about different study habits to ace your midterms. This housing-sponsored event is open to residents, and all materials will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Transportation Fair 
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
CHHS Plaza
The Office of Parking and Transportation Services has gathered more than 20 organizations from campus and the Charlotte region to offer transportation advice, safety tips and simulations. Know your options for being a savvy, sustainable traveler in the Charlotte region.  

Campus Cleanup
Thursday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
McMillan Greenhouse and Memorial Hall
Help make the campus a more pristine place. Register as an individual or as a group, organizers will sign off on any volunteer hours that you may need.

Fall Plant Sale
Thursday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 8
Lot 5
The Botanical Gardens Fall Plant Sale begins with a day for members followed by two days open to the public. You’ll find an outstanding selection of native and non-native hardy shrubs, trees, perennials, wildflowers, ferns and cool weather annuals. This is a great opportunity to ask lots of questions of the gardens’ knowledgeable staff and volunteers. All proceeds support the operations of the gardens and greenhouse.

SOA Colloquium: Jefferson Ellinger
