Meet Mike Reynolds

Meet Mike Reynolds
Wednesday, November 16, 2022

A native New Yorker, Officer Mike Reynolds began his law enforcement career with the New York Police Department in 1986. His many memories with the NYPD include being a first responder to the World Trade Center in 2001, making detective and retiring after 20 years of service. Upon relocation to Charlotte, he served 12 years with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Now, as a member of Niner Nation, Reynolds is among the many who make UNC Charlotte a great place to live, study and work.

Reynolds was recently awarded the UNC System's Police Officer of the Year award for exceptional service. He was recognized for quickly taking a suspect into custody after the individual tried to flee from fellow officers following an encounter at the light rail station.

Get to know him in this Q&A.

How long have you been at UNC Charlotte?Officer Mike Reynolds is honored during a ceremony by the UNC System for his exceptional service.

I have been part of the UNC Charlotte Police Department for over three years.

You were recently recognized with the Police Officer of the Year award by the UNC System. Tell us more about the award and what it means to you

The award is given to the officer who does outstanding work on patrol and can show great leadership qualities in different situations. It means so much to me because it makes you know that people appreciate what you do.

What is the most rewarding part of your job

It is most rewarding when the day is finished, and I realize I have helped someone. It could be saving their lives or steering them in a positive direction. We are all human, and I want people to realize that officers do more than just arrest people; we are here to help change people, too - for the better.

What is your favorite place on campus?

I love UREC and the Popp Martin Student Union because everybody goes there. You can feel the excitement in the areas due to the amount of people there. It is an excellent way to meet new people and see new faces.

What do you enjoy about living in Charlotte?

I grew up in a big city, and it’s the quiet country style of Charlotte I love most. I also appreciate being able to find good entertainment and food here as well.

What fun fact do most people not know about you?

I love a good laugh; laughter is good for the soul. I am a positive person who believes that we are all here on this earth for a reason. We should make the best of what we have and improve daily.
