Aetna awarded State Health Plan contract effective January 2025

Monday, January 9, 2023

On Wednesday, Jan. 4, North Carolina Treasurer Dale Folwell and the State Health Plan announced Aetna was awarded the third-party administrator contract beginning in January 2025. The State Health Plan provides health care coverage to state employees, teachers, retirees and state community college and university workers, including UNC Charlotte employees.

The State Health Plan is required to bid for its services, including TPA services, approximately every five years. As a result of this process, Aetna was awarded the contract that is set to begin in 2025. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is the current TPA for the State Health Plan and has indicated it will appeal the decision.

The Benefits Office knows employees will have questions about what this means for their health care coverage and is committed to sharing those answers as soon as it has them through Niner Insider updates.
