Remembrance Memorial
A commemorative memorial and “constellation garden” are under construction in Belk Plaza in front of Kennedy Hall to memorialize Reed Parlier, Riley Howell and the other victims of the April 30, 2019 shooting. The design features an arching metal structure with strings of lights representing the night sky. Curving paths, trees and landscaping will create a space for contemplation and reflection. Construction, which began in August 2022, is scheduled for completion in April 2023.
The depiction of the stars, portrayed by lights, are activated when people touch the memorial’s arched structure; the adjacent gathering spaces feature symbols-based plants that represent human emotions such as sorrow, divine sacrifice, strength, hope, love, and peace and harmony; and stone benches etched with the names of Reed and Riley and the survivors create an atmosphere of contemplation and reflection.
The 49th Acre – Student Outdoor Event Venue and Tailgating Park
A $10 million gift from an anonymous donor is funding the construction of a three-acre outdoor complex to provide year-round opportunities for informal and organized student gatherings, including tailgating prior to Charlotte 49ers football games. An 8,000-square-foot entertainment pavilion will anchor the venue, located beside Richardson Stadium near the North Carolina Motorsports Lab and football practice fields. A signature gateway portal will welcome venue users to the complex that will accommodate more than 2,500 students. Construction is scheduled for completion by fall of 2023 — just in time to kick off the football season.
Residence Hall
A new five-story, 147,000-square-foot residence hall is under construction in South Village near SoVi Dining Hall. The building’s design includes traditional double rooms for up to 692 residents and their resident advisors. Building amenities will include a community kitchen, laundry room, game tables and office and living space for the Office of Housing and Residence Life staff.
Estimated completion date: July 2023.
