Meet Lucian Wilhelm
Lucian Wilhelm, a veteran Charlotte staff member with 28 years of service, is the senior associate director for conferences, reservations and event services. Learn about her role, her obsession with BBC dramas and the day she met the Beastie Boys.
Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?
I manage the office that schedules meetings and events across campus for internal and affiliated groups. We primarily work with student organizations and departments to schedule space and event support.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I enjoy getting to know our student employees and watching them grow. It’s rewarding when they come back to campus after graduation and make a point to stop by to see me. Several student employees have become full-time staff members at the University or other system schools and I get to work with them in an entirely different way.
What’s your favorite UNC Charlotte memory?
Meeting the Beastie Boys! SGA hosted a national Rock the Vote campaign event during the 2008 national election cycle and the Beastie Boys came to campus to encourage students to vote. They were incredibly lovely.
What advice do you have for prospective employees?
Don’t just meet people from other departments and units; really try to understand their role on campus. You’ll be surprised how often roles intersect. I’ve found that understanding what others are doing in their work and what impacts them leads to a better understanding of the University as a whole.
What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I read a lot, and I have an unhealthy obsession with BBC dramas. I also like to cook but not during the week. That’s too much pressure.
What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this fall?
I’m looking forward to the students coming back next week, football and hopefully cooler weather soon.
