Originally from Grenada, Mississippi, Marlo Hardiman is the assistant controller in the payroll and tax department. Learn some surprising facts about payroll, her off-the-clock activities and the benefits of signing up for an electronic W-2.

Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?

We are responsible for paying faculty, staff and student employees and for submitting payments for retirement, health benefits, payroll taxes and a variety of other payroll deductions. Another responsibility includes printing W-2s, 1099s and 1042s.

Speaking of W-2s, did you know you can receive your W-2s faster by signing up for electronic delivery? Follow the instructions to consent for electronic delivery.

The Tax Department is responsible for processing the treaty benefits for all of our foreign national employees. We have students from many countries, and the United States has different treaty benefits with several of these countries. The tax staff meets with each employee individually to determine if they qualify. We also handle a variety of tax questions and tax remittances.

What is something about your job that people may be surprised to learn

I think people may be surprised at the volume of information we process for each pay period.  The payroll team runs a minimum of four payrolls each month.

They might also be surprised by the entire payroll process. We are the final stop in paying the employee; however, we do not determine the employee’s pay.  All of the information starts at the department level, flows through human resources, and then finally to us in payroll.

What do you like to do when you aren't working?

I enjoy baking, arts and crafts, concerts and trying new restaurants.

What's a fun fact about you many people may not know?

I have about four craft projects in progress right now.

What’s your favorite fall activity

I love tailgating.

What’s your favorite part about UNC Charlotte’s campus

I enjoy the greenway and other green spaces.
