Weiter Appointed Interim Dean of Atkins Library
Stephen P. Weiter has been retained as interim dean of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte effective Jan. 1, 2024, until a permanent dean is hired to succeed Anne Cooper Moore, who will retire Dec. 31. Weiter will be assisting and consulting with Moore in December to help facilitate a smooth transition.
“I am grateful for all Anne has done to elevate the library’s support of teaching and research at the University,” said Jennifer Troyer, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Stephen’s experience delivering library services to meet the complex needs of a campus community and his history of collaborative leadership will be integral in ensuring Atkins Library maintains its exceptional reputation during this transitional period.”
Prior to his work with UNC Charlotte, Weiter was the dean of university libraries at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. With more than 15 years of progressive library leadership experience, he also served in senior librarian positions at SUNY College for Environmental Science and Forestry, the New York State Appellate Division Law Library and the Finger Lakes Library System.
He has authored numerous papers and has been an invited presenter for multiple professional library and educational associations. Weiter was the managing editor and publisher of the peer reviewed Open Access Journal: The Journal of New Librarianship prior to his retirement.
He holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in political science from the University of Louisville, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a Master of Library Science from the Syracuse University School of Information Studies. He also completed studies at the Leadership Institute for Academic LIbrarians at Harvard University.
