$90 Million Victory

North Carolina voters made sure they were heard. The Connect NC bond passed with 66 percent voting in favor of the $2 billion bond. Of that amount, UNC Charlotte will receive $90 million for a much needed new science building.

This was a big win for the University. Without a new science building, UNC Charlotte’s ability to grow was constrained. Sixty-one percent of the entire UNC system’s recent growth is attributed to UNC Charlotte, and roughly 50 percent of students with declared majors are in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).

"This vote reaffirms the commitment of the voters of North Carolina to higher education, and we are truly overwhelmed by their support," said Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. "To start, we must thank Gov. McCrory and the North Carolina General Assembly for putting it on the ballot. The real winners are the students who will come to UNC Charlotte and the employers who will benefit from their skills and knowledge."

Along with funds for the UNC system and community colleges, the Connect NC bond package also supports state parks, local water and sewer system improvements, the National Guard and public safety.

UNC Charlotte extends enormous thanks to all bond supporters including the University community and our strong allies in the business community led by the Charlotte Chamber.

Planning for the new building has begun; stay tuned.
