Building Blocks

With spring 2017 Commencement in the rearview mirror, it is officially summer at UNC Charlotte. Yet make no mistake – activity on campus has not slowed but actually gone into overdrive. We’ve got updates on some of the largest projects.

Health and Wellness Center

In mid-summer, construction will begin on the new Health and Wellness Center. The $63.5 million, 140,000-square-foot facility will include aerobic and weight training rooms, group fitness areas, multipurpose courts, a recreational pool and space for administration. The facility will be located next to Popp Martin Student Union, at the corner of Cameron Boulevard and Craver Road. Construction is expected to complete by July 2019.

Union Deck Expansion

The Student Union Deck will be expanded to add 570 parking spaces to the structure’s west end, making up for spaces lost with the closure of lots 18 and 19 to accommodate the Health and Wellness Center. When completed in May 2018, the expansion will have effectively added parking spaces to this side of campus.

A Student Counseling Center will provide additional space for the counselors who are currently located in Atkins Library. The new building will include individual meeting rooms as well as rooms for group therapy. Located adjacent to the current Student Health Center at the corner of Cameron and Mary Alexander, the larger counseling facility should be completed in fall of 2017.

Scott Hall Rendering

Scott Hall

A major renovation of Scott Hall, a 500-bed high rise in South Village, began in May. Originally built in 1969, much-needed improvements include refurbishing residential rooms, windows and roof replacement and updates to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. In addition, the exterior will be brick clad in coordination with Holshouser Hall. Scott Hall will be closed for the 2017-18 academic year, as construction should take 10 months to complete. Renovations of the final two high rises, Moore and Sanford, are planned for 2019 and 2020, respectively.

The Charlotte Research Institute entrance, at North Tryon Street and Institute Circle, is getting the Niner treatment with an official entryway designed to mirror the main entrance at University City Boulevard. Work will include a UNC Charlotte sign, brick columns and enhancements to pedestrian access. Construction will begin this fall.

The long-awaited revitalization of Belk Plaza will start in September and take about six months to complete. The project includes a “great lawn” and a unique water feature with plans to be an outdoor “living room” for campus. Read more about the conceptual design of the plaza.

Sire of new science building

Science Building

No construction update would be complete without mention of UNC Charlotte’s largest project ever – a $101 million science building. This state-of-the-art interdisciplinary facility will house instructional classrooms and research labs in chemistry, physics and biological sciences. The building will be located at the corner of Mary Alexander and Craver roads, and design is currently underway. Project completion is expected to take approximately 18 months, with construction starting in late 2018. The anticipated occupancy date is late 2020.
