It's Great Being Green

Charlotte 49ers colors aren’t the only green we celebrate on campus. In June, UNC Charlotte was honored as a “Tree Campus USA.” Sounds nice, but what exactly does it mean? We did some research, and here’s what you should know:

Tree Campus USA is an initiative started in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to help universities establish and sustain healthy community forests. The designation lauds schools that proactively grow, manage and preserve campus trees.

Already boasting acclaim for its Botanical Gardens and strong sustainability efforts, UNC Charlotte is thrilled to add this feather to its cap. To date, only 245 campuses nationwide have the distinction.

“UNC Charlotte being named a Tree Campus USA underscores our commitment to create a visually appealing environment that integrates our campus architecture with the natural landscape that already exists,” said Peter Franz, campus landscape architect

The University has a campus tree advisory committee and tree care plan, as well as service learning and volunteer planting programs. These guys get green thumbs up from us.
