UNC Charlotte’s 49er Democracy Experience brings together expert faculty, civic-minded students and community partners for educational programming to enhance understanding of and participation in the nation’s democratic process.

During this year’s election season, members of the 49er Democracy Experience volunteered at campus voter registration sites, visited classes to discuss civic engagement and staffed University information tables to answers voter-related questions.

The 49er Democracy Experience began during the 2012 presidential election. Charlotte hosted the Democratic Presidential Nominating Convention and UNC Charlotte collaborated with higher education institutions, business, civic and community leaders to provide an array of opportunities and educational programming for students, faculty, staff and the broader community. As North Carolina’s urban research university and the Charlotte region’s largest higher education institution, it is fitting that UNC Charlotte has been a leader in this unique initiative.

Early Voting on Campus

UNC Charlotte was one of many early voting sites across the state, and 8,474 people voted on campus between Oct. 27 and Nov. 5, including many voting in their first election.

UNC Charlotte’s student body president encouraged his peers to participate in early voting on campus. "It is a critical time in our country’s history," said Fahn Darkor (’18). "Let’s make UNC Charlotte a community that provides involvement, knowledge and pride. Remember, your vote is your voice."
