Fall classes have been in session for several weeks, and the campus has never seemed more lively and packed – and that’s because it hasn’t been. The 2016 academic year ushered in a host of achievements, including the largest enrollment in University history.
With the theme of growth in mind, here are a few highlights of the 2016 academic year:
2016-2017 Academic Year
- Total student enrollment is near 28,800 with about 23,300 of those comprising undergraduates. That’s the largest enrollment UNC Charlotte has ever experienced and a 34 percent increase in just 10 years.
- UNC Charlotte welcomed close to 6,400 new students – that’s approximately 3,450 freshmen and 2,900 transfer students. The current student body represents all 100 North Carolina counties and 50 countries.
- An even more impressive stat - since 2009, UNC Charlotte has accounted for 61 percent of the total UNC system growth. We can’t wait to see that figure once final fall enrollments have been reported.
- Another impressive high-water mark - private fundraising set a record, surpassing $30 million, and externally funded research exceeded $40 million.
- The University launched two new doctoral programs, including a first for the Carolinas. Belk College is pioneering a Doctorate in Business Administration, not only unique within the UNC system but the only one of its kind in the region. The College of Education will soon offer a Doctorate in Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation.
Here’s to another great academic year. Welcome home, Class of 2020!
