A class of her own — Brie Wray prepares for a career with support from a new scholarship for adult learners
This time next year, Brie Wray expects to be in charge of her own classroom, creating a welcoming place for elementary students. Adult learners, like Wray, often balance competing priorities in pursuit of their college degrees. For Wray, who earned an associate degree from Gaston College in May 2020, full-time employment, marriage and purchasing a home added stress to her collegiate journey.

COVID-19 mitigation testing
The University is continuing to conduct ongoing COVID-19 mitigation testing of unvaccinated nonresidential students, faculty and staff. If you have not scheduled your mitigation test for the current week, Nov. 7-12, please do so now. UNC Charlotte is covering the cost of on-campus mitigation testing. If you do not register for and participate in an on-campus test, you will need to submit an off-campus, negative test result, at your expense, by Friday, Nov. 12, at 11:59 p.m.

- The Department of State Treasurer Retirement Systems Division will conduct a retirement webinar for members of the Teachers' and State Employees Retirement System today, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. This interactive online web conference will provide an orientation for new members, pre-retirement planning information for members closer to retirement and educational information for personnel officers and others who handle retirement matters.
- The Active Learning Academy workshop, “Examining Active Collaborative Learning in Online Classes,” on Thursday, Nov. 11, led by an interdisciplinary, cross-college faculty panel, will share strategies and high-impact practices for facilitating active collaborative learning in online classes.
- Register for a virtual lunch-and-learn workshop scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Nov. 17; the topic is loneliness and social isolation in today's world.
- CLT ConnectEd is a one-day symposium where higher education and student affairs professionals meet to share, inspire and network. The call for programs is now open! Higher education professionals and graduate students of all levels are encouraged to share their experiences and expertise. Each session will be 50 minutes. Presenters should ensure at least 10 minutes for Q&A or discussion. Proposals must be submitted by 11:59 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12. Presenters will be notified of their program status by Monday, Nov. 22. YOUR DAILY NEED TO KNOW: STUDENTS
- Dining services is sponsoring a nonperishable food drive Nov. 8-18 at SoVi dining hall to benefit the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. Students who donate three or more cans will be entered into a drawing for a plated meal for two. The food drive will conclude with a 'Thank-ful Friendsgiving' event at SoVi from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18.
- Atkins Library has Verizon mobile hotspot devices to loan! Students can borrow a hotspot from the first-floor Information and Research Desk.

- 11/9: Join either virtually or in the Atkins Library Halton Room for a lunch-and-learn where Tonya Anderson (UNC Charlotte School of Nursing) will discuss advances in this field of medicine, including new software systems for continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps using Bluetooth real-time data and computerized insulin pumps.
- 11/10: Learn to set your own print on the 3-D printers at Atkins library.
- 11/12: The School of Architecture's 50th Anniversary Lecture Series celebrates the school’s vision during its 50-year history as it looks to the future. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, renowned practitioners and scholars will explore historical developments in architecture since the school’s inception and examine current and future trends in the discipline in a continuously changing profession.
