UNC Charlotte research, outreach efforts on well water safety in Gaston County set to expand

A significant proportion of Gaston County residents get their drinking water from private wells and other unregulated sources, particularly in the county’s northern and western rural communities. Yet, only a small fraction of residents test their water regularly. A UNC Charlotte team of researchers and students will work with residents and county health officials to boost the number of people doing tests regularly and improve the sharing of data with a $49,999 award from the state Environmental Enhancement Grant program.

Every Friday we will introduce a Niner. Have a suggestion on who we should highlight next? Email us at ninerinsider.uncc.edu.

YOUR DAILY NEED TO KNOW: FACULTY & STAFF

    • The faculty-led workshop, “Reimagining Learning Materials,” scheduled for noon, Monday, Nov. 22, addresses the use of alternative learning materials versus traditional academic learning materials as well as how the utilization of nontraditional materials may extend before, during and after class meetings. Application of strategies will be discussed within the context of different learning levels and course types.
    • A reminder for benefits-eligible employees: If you enrolled in the State Health Plan during open enrollment and indicated you were a tobacco user willing to visit a CVS MinuteClinic or a primary care provider for tobacco cessation counseling, you have until Tuesday, Nov. 30, to complete at least one cessation session or risk using your premium credit.
    • Reminder: Digital letterhead is available for faculty and staff use. Make a copy and save to your Google Drive. There is not an option that allows for sub-branding, but you can add your department/unit/division information in the footer portion of the letterhead. Please do not alter the approved layout of this University template.

YOUR DAILY NEED TO KNOW: STUDENTS

    • Alternative Service Break 2022 will be March 7-12. During this opportunity, students forgo their traditional spring break to engage in community volunteerism. Whether you are building houses, cleaning up after storms or playing with kids or animals, you will learn about new cultures, social issues and how to be an active citizen. Register by Tuesday, Nov. 30. Students who will be enrolled during the spring semester can select their own paths: Juvenile Justice/Mass Incarceration (Selma, Alabama), Refugee Resettlement (Charlotte) or Housing and Food Insecurity (Atlanta, Georgia).
    • Faculty from the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are seeking students to participate in a virtual Zoom focus group to identify realistic drinking scenarios common among undergraduate students and the use of helpful bystander behaviors to address problematic alcohol use. By identifying these scenarios and behaviors, faculty will be better able to generate survey items for a full measure of bystander intervention for problematic alcohol use. A brief survey to determine eligibility is required; click the link for more details.
    • Staying on or around campus during the holiday break? For a limited time, you are able to pre-order meals through NinerDiners Mobile. Look for Crown2Go Holiday Break Meals under the Swipes2Go section. Use your meal plan (swipes, Declining Balance & Optional Dining Account) or bank card then select the day and time of pick up. Meals will be in microwavable containers to make reheating a breeze!
