Research

Research is fundamental to the mission of UNC Charlotte. New knowledge and creative works change the world and shape the future of the University. Charlotte values research in all its forms, including scholarly inquiry, discovery, exploration, innovation, entrepreneurship, creative activities, community engagement and/or interdisciplinary endeavors.

UNC Charlotte’s research endeavors are distinct:

  • Among the 229 public doctoral-granting research universities in the United States, 124 hold the Carnegie Community Engaged University classification. Carnegie’s community engagement classification signifies that UNC Charlotte collaborates with its larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in the context of partnership and reciprocity
  • UNC Charlotte is among the 80 public universities that have earned the APLU's Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities designation recognizes that UNC Charlotte has demonstrated a meaningful, ongoing and substantial commitment to economic and community development, growth and economic opportunity

Significant research activities are focused in UNC System recognized centers and institutes. And in 2023, Charlotte launched 12 new pilot centers to foster synergistic research initiatives. In 2022, Ventureprise became the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Personally Speaking talk to focus on ‘Middle Class Meltdown in America’

UNC Charlotte author and researcher Scott Fitzgerald will dissect these troubles and explore ways to regain prosperity, in the first talk of UNC Charlotte’s Personally Speaking series for 2014-15.

Engineering students compete in UK railway challenge

Teaming up with students from England’s University of Birmingham, two graduate students from the Lee College Engineering participated in the third annual Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Railway Challenge this summer, where they learned that building a working electric locomotive is a real challenge.

Mellichamp authors ‘Native Plants of the Southeast’

Music professor’s ‘Violins of Hope’ published

Jay Grymes, interim chair of the Department of Music, has written a new book “Violins of Hope: Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind’s Darkest Hour.” The book, published by HarperCollins, is receiving critical praise and should be in bookstores now.

Ramoz to lead University’s biosafety program

Gina Ramoz recently joined UNC Charlotte as biosafety director in the Office of Research and Economic Development. With nearly 30 years of scientific experience working in clinical, research and academic laboratories, Ramoz will manage the biosafety program for the University’s rapidly growing and evolving research and academic environment.

Ohio State researcher to discuss biomedical informatics

Philip Payne, chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Ohio State University, will kick off this year’s Health Informatics Seminar Series; his talk is scheduled for 4 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, in Fretwell Building, Room 126.

Students part of plant pathways project at N.C. Research Campus

UNC Charlotte chemistry major Alexis Brown is spending her summer participating in a groundbreaking program at the North Carolina Research Campus, exploring the plant pathways of food crops such as blueberries, oats and strawberries.  And more. “We are trying to create the super broccoli,” she said.

Urban Institute joins National Neighborhood Indicator Partnership

The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute has been accepted into the National Neighborhood Indicator Partnership (NNIP), which is a collaborative effort by the Washington D.C.-based Urban Institute and local partners to further the development and use of neighborhood information systems in local policymaking and community building.

CCI’s Shaoting Zhang receives junior faculty award

Shaoting Zhang, an assistant professor in the College of Computing and Informatics Department of Computer Science, has received a 2014 Ralph E. Power Junior Faculty Enhancement Award.  Presented by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU),  the award provides seed money for research by junior faculty at ORAU member institutions.

Outstanding students recognized at third annual Summer Research Symposium

The top three student poster presenters were selected at the third annual Summer Research Symposium, the culminating event for the Charlotte Research Scholars program. More than 80 undergraduate students competed in the poster presentation on scholarly topics across a number of disciplines. The winners were Jenna Brown, Nadia Clifton and Hunter Reavis.

University’s Solar Decathlon entry among favorites in statewide contest

UNC Charlotte’s UrbanEden, built for the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, placed third in the people’s choice voting for the annual Matsumoto Prize for Modernist residential design in North Carolina.
