wHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: FACULTY AND STAFF

  • Building Access Monday: During the MLK holiday, Monday, Jan. 20, all academic and office buildings will be card access only for authorized personnel. Atkins Library will be closed. Dining locations, the Popp Martin Student Union and other public spaces will remain open.
  • Insurance Reminder: Health insurance deductions began with your Friday, Dec. 13, paycheck, and NCFlex deductions began with your Wednesday, Jan. 15, paycheck. If you enrolled in any of these benefits for the 2025 plan year, verify the benefit plans and deductions on your paycheck with your open enrollment confirmation statement. Report any discrepancies to the Benefits Office. 
  • Proof of Coverage/COBRA Notification: Employees covered by the State Health Plan in 2024 may receive a COBRA notification in the mail, which is required to be distributed by the previous SHP third party administrator, BlueCross/BlueShield of NC, to signify the end of the coverage BCBS managed. Employees do not need to take action, and the notifications do not impact employees’ SHP coverage through Aetna.
  • Bereavement Leave: The UNC System has adopted the Governor’s Executive Order 325 on bereavement leave, which provides paid leave for the loss of an immediate family member or colleague.
  • Fretwell Construction: On Monday, Jan. 20, construction work will begin in Fretwell Building. Occupants should expect to hear loud noises periodically during this time.

  • Fall 2024 Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists: Congratulations to the fall 2024 Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists recipients.
  • QPR Training Session: Question, Persuade, Refer is a suicide prevention training that teaches individuals to recognize the warning signs of suicide. The next QPR virtual session is from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The Black Alumni Chapter Invites all faculty, staff and students to the Kingian Life, Legacy and Leadership Panel from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. The event is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

  • Upcoming Career Fairs: The spring career fairs, hosted by the Career Center, include the STEM Fair Thursday, Jan. 30, and the Career and Internship Fair, Thursday, Feb. 13. 
  • Take a Hike: Join Venture Outdoor Leadership for its Winter Wanderlust day hike Saturday, Jan. 25. Designed for both beginners and experienced hikers, the adventure trip leaders will guide and teach participants as they enjoy the amazing views that only come from a winter hike. Registration is due noon, Wednesday, Jan. 22.

  • 2024 Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists: Want to recognize your students who made the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists for fall 2024? View the full list to congratulate your students today!
  • Ad Hoc Review Committee: The goal of the Ad Hoc Review Committee on Faculty Council Standing Committee Structure and Governance is to review the structure, workload and governance documents of 19 faculty committees to improve efficiency, equity and the overall experience of committee service. The committee is accepting volunteers; contact Denis Jacob Machado, assistant professor of bioinformatics and genomics, for additional information.
  • Headspace Update: Employees have access to Headspace coaching via text-based chats and self-care activities. Due to the State Health Plan change to Aetna, Headspace’s clinical services are currently out-of-network. Headspace is working to address this situation.
  • Great Decisions Lecture Series: Five talks are scheduled for the annual Great Decisions lecture series, a national program of the Foreign Policy Association. The hybrid events, co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs, run from Wednesday, Jan. 29, and Wednesday, Feb. 26. 
  • Mental Health First Aid Training: Mental Health First Aid is a national program that teaches skills to respond to someone struggling with distress or suicidal ideation. The next virtual faculty/staff MHFA training is 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, and Friday, Jan. 31.

  • Canvas Updates: The Canvas login URL changed this semester. As a result, previously created Zoom meetings and recordings will not automatically display in the Canvas Zoom interface. Read how to access them here.
  • Concur Training: Concur training sessions have been updated for 2025. The first session, Purchasing Card Expense Reports (Non-travel), is from 11 a.m. to noon, today. Register on the learning and development portal.
  • Operating System Updates: Upgrade your device to the latest operating system (Mac OS Sequoia or Windows 11 24H2) before the automatic update Monday, March 3.
  • AI on Campus: Learn about approved AI software and how to purchase new AI tools.
  • Additional OneIT Training: Learn more about Zoom Phone, Zoom AI and Google Workspace at OneIT training sessions in January.

UNC Charlotte’s Police and Public Safety Department recently celebrated the promotion of 16 officers and three awardees at its annual promotions ceremony. The department also recently received dual accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Charlotte is the only university in North Carolina to achieve this dual accreditation.
