Isabella Gargano

Name: Isabella Gargano
Hometown: Mooresville, North Carolina
Major: Health Systems Management
Minor: Public Health

Why did you choose UNC Charlotte?

I chose UNC Charlotte because of the school’s proximity and connections to large health care systems like Atrium and Novant.

Why did you choose to pursue a master’s degree?

My undergraduate degree taught me how expansive the health system is and how much there is to learn about. To be fit for a management position, higher education is often required. I want to have the education and leadership skills necessary to improve health care quality and access here in Charlotte.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

Ms. Deborah Beete was not only supportive as a professor, but her passion for public health was evident. Her knowledge and devotion to the subject made it easy to learn and encouraged me to pursue my minor in public health.

What are your immediate plans following graduation?

As an early entry student in the Master of Health Administration program here at UNC Charlotte, I will be continuing on with my studies and work in the department.

What excites you most about your area of study?

Health care is something that everyone needs, and the field is constantly evolving and growing. I’m looking forward to being a part of a team that helps improve health not only at the individual but also at the community level.

What was your favorite or most memorable moment outside of the classroom?

At the beginning of COVID, I was able to independently raise $500 for Second Harvest Food Bank. This money helped pay for food for families in Charlotte during a scary and unpredictable time for many.

What do you know about yourself now that you didn’t know before coming to UNC Charlotte?

As someone who is introverted, I had no idea that I was capable of leadership.

What advice would you give to an incoming student?

I would tell an incoming student that once you find your passion, school becomes a lot easier. I would also say that the professors here love what they do and want to help students succeed. Making connections with professors is helpful not only in the classroom but for networking as well!

Summarize your Charlotte experience in three words.
