Holshouser Hall renovation wins CPN’s Star Award
The renovation project for Holshouser Residence Hall, which reopened in 2015, has received a 2016 Star Award from the Construction Professionals Network (CPN) of North Carolina.
The honor, presented at CPN’s 17th annual conference in May, recognizes and promotes professionalism and excellence in “star quality” projects. The University received the award for projects that totaled between $10 million and $25 million.
Sytsma named sustainability coordinator
Tyler Sytsma recently joined UNC Charlotte as the University sustainability coordinator. A member of the Facilities Management Department, Sytsma will handle various projects that involve offices/departments across campus.

FM automotive team among top motor fleets
The automotive team in the Facilities Management Department recently received honorable mention as one of the top motor fleets in the Americas by 100 Best Fleets in the Americas.
The organization, founded by Tom Johnson, is part of the 100 Best Fleets Program. He noted, “To me, you are unsung heroes … Your efforts are having an immediate and impressive effect on the economy. To put it in perspective, there are over 38,000 public fleets in North America alone and thousands more in South America.”
Test of emergency alert systems scheduled
UNC Charlotte will test its emergency alert systems between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 31.
All communications will indicate that a test is in progress and that no actual emergency exists. Emergency alert tests occur periodically throughout the year as part of the University’s emergency preparedness program. No special action by members of the campus community should be necessary during this test.

Annual awards ceremony recognizes outstanding police officers, employees
Members of the UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety Department (PPS) are dedicated to serving the campus with distinction, and National Police Week provided an appropriate opportunity to honor outstanding members of the department.
Kenny Elmore was named Officer of the Year at Friday’s awards ceremony; he also was recognized with a promotion to field training officer. Barbara Brookover received a promotion to telecommunications supervisor; she is the first in the UNC system to achieve this advanced employment level.
Governor declares May ‘Internal Audit Month’
Gov. Pat McCrory has designated May 2016 as “Internal Audit Month” in North Carolina in a proclamation signed April 25.
The governor’s recognition of the internal audit profession and its contributions to the state complement the activities taking place across North Carolina as audit professionals highlight their role protecting organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice and insight.
Temporary closure at Cameron/Craver/Phillips intersection extended
The closing of the intersection at Cameron Boulevard with Craver and Phillips Roads to replace crosswalks has been extended to the afternoon of Monday, May 23, due to this week’s weather.
Drivers and pedestrians should expect concrete trucks and other heavy construction equipment in the area. Signage and barricades will be erected.
Individuals should stay alert and exercise caution when approaching construction areas.

The Parking and Transportation Services Office (PaTS) will provide modified shuttle service during first and second summer sessions. The summer shuttle will operate internally using SafeRide evening transportation vans.
