How the Internal Audit Department decides which units to audit

The annual audit planning process takes into account a number of factors to determine which campus units will be visited.

Julie Earls, an internal auditor in the Internal Audit Department, stated, “Our internal audit professional standards require UNC Charlotte’s chief audit officer to establish a risk-based audit plan that considers the University’s goals. In other words, what could keep the University from achieving its objectives?”

The audit plan is a direct result of a risk assessment, she added.

Staff Council expresses appreciation during National Police Week

In recognition of National Police Week, the UNC Charlotte Staff Council recently delivered coffee and donuts to the University’s Police and Public Safety Department.

Members of the council’s executive team, chair Jim Kay, vice chair Penny Stevens and communications officer Jessica Barton, dropped by the PPS Department to express appreciation to the officers for “all they do for our campus community.”

Members of the Internal Audit Department visit approximately 15 campus units each year. These visits can be anxiety-inducing and prompt questions such as “What if we are doing something wrong? Am I going to lose my job over this?  How can we be prepared for the audit?”

One way departments can relieve their anxiety is through conducting a controls self-assessment.

UNC Charlotte earns two safety awards

The N.C. Department of Labor recently recognized UNC Charlotte with its Gold Award for providing a safe and healthy workplace, as well as a 2 Million Hour Award for consecutive hours worked without lost time due to employee injury.

Campus safety is a shared responsibility across the University, and these honors underscore our commitment to fostering a culture of safety at UNC Charlotte, said Darius Griffin, director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office; he and Angela Allen, workers’ compensation administrator, accepted the awards on behalf of the University.

New website to provide info on campus construction

Faculty, staff and students interested in construction projects that are planned for or are ongoing in campus buildings can utilize a new online communications tool – the UNC Charlotte Facilities Conditions Customer View Map.

The website map provides a color-coded Facilities Condition Index (FCI) about each campus building (Firefox or Google Chrome are recommended browsers for the website).

Faces – Solomon Franklin

Solomon Franklin is enthusiastic about making a difference, not only at UNC Charlotte but in the greater community.

A member of the 100 Black Men of Greater Charlotte Inc., Franklin mentors two young men, one in middle school, the other is in high school. He also is on the organization’s board of directors as chief operating officer.

State Construction Office recognizes two campus projects

Bringing two major facilities online – the PORTAL Building and Richardson Stadium – requires a collaborative effort by the teams involved. The State Construction Office recently recognized the two projects and named them “best managed.” UNC Charlotte was the only state agency to have multiple construction projects earn such recognition this year.

State Construction Office personnel, known as monitors, determine which capital projects are deemed “best managed.”

Volunteer for spring campus cleanup

The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling and the Facilities Management Grounds Department will coordinate a campus-wide cleanup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 15. Also, volunteers can help with a tree planting from 10 a.m. to noon.

The EARTH Club and Charlotte Green Initiative are organizing student volunteers, and Chancellor Philip L. Dubois has authorized 90 minutes of release time for all faculty and staff members who are interested in joining in this effort. Participation must be approved by supervisors based upon the office/department/unit needs.

New session of Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less to start

A new offering of Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less begins on Monday, April 27.

This 15-week weight-management program is developed by health experts. State Health Plan members can participate for $30 with a $25 refund for those who attend 10 of the 15 sessions.

The course fee must be paid at the first session. Fifteen registrants are needed to form a class. Tina Mendieta from the Mecklenburg County Health Department will lead the program, which will meet at noon in Colvard Building, Room 5092.
