Integrated Design Research Lab projects awarded I-Corps grants

Two new projects being developed through the School of Architecture’s Integrated Design Research Lab have each received 2020 Innovation Corps (I-Corps) grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Created in 2011, the I-Corps program is designed to support the commercialization of new technology discoveries in science and engineering.

Theatre professor’s social circus project is NEFA finalist

The Nouveau Sud Circus Project, founded and directed by Associate Professor of Theatre CarlosAlexis Cruz, has been named a 2020 National Theater Project finalist by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA). Chosen from among 90 applicants, the 28 finalists will now complete full applications for Creation and Touring Grants, ranging from $80,000 to $130,000, which fund the development and national touring of new work.

Alumnus co-organized ‘Dance for George’

Sheen Jamaal ’16, a New York City-based dance artist, recently co-organized the peaceful protest “Dance for George.”According to an article in the New York Times, the event was a tribute to George Floyd, who died while he was handcuffed and forcibly restrained by officers from the Minneapolis Police Department, and to call attention to the work of black artists at the heart of the dance and entertainment industries.

Architecture students’ 9 predictions for the future resulting from COVID-19

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in the middle of the spring semester, it added a new layer of significance to the assignments in Assistant Professor of Architectural History Lidia Klein’s spring seminar. The curriculum for the graduate course, “Architecture and Production: From Assembly Line to 3-D Printing,” challenged students to investigate “changes in methods of architectural production from the 19th century to the present,” placing those changes “within social, political, cultural and economic contexts.”
