Botanical Gardens to hold Carnivorous Plant Carnival
A two-hour family friendly Carnivorous Plant Carnival will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 25, at McMillan Greenhouse.
Organized by the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, this event will feature hands-on games and activities suitable for children ages 4 to 12 – including the chance to feed a Venus flytrap.

Social sustainability event focuses on communities and connections
A network of people from varied walks of life will gather in Charlotte and other U.S. and U.K. cities Wednesday, June 8, through Friday, June 10, to delve into transportation, connections with the natural world, the value of human well-being and security and social and physical mobility.
These topics and more comprise the fourth annual conference of the Integrated Network for Social Sustainability (INSS). With a theme of “Communities and Connections,” the conference is open to the public at no charge, but registrations are requested.

Annual awards ceremony recognizes outstanding police officers, employees
Members of the UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety Department (PPS) are dedicated to serving the campus with distinction, and National Police Week provided an appropriate opportunity to honor outstanding members of the department.
Kenny Elmore was named Officer of the Year at Friday’s awards ceremony; he also was recognized with a promotion to field training officer. Barbara Brookover received a promotion to telecommunications supervisor; she is the first in the UNC system to achieve this advanced employment level.
International team investigating marine species adaptation
Animals can adapt to their environment through changes to their DNA, but more recently, research has shown that non-genetic components may be important, too. Two central non-genetic contributors to individual variation are chemical modifications of the DNA, epigenetics, and associations with different bacterial species or microbial symbioses.
UNC Charlotte biological sciences professor Adam Reitzel is leading an international team to investigate how epigenetic regulations and microbial communities are influencing the adaptation of coastal marine species to climate change.
Cancer researcher honored by Charlotte International Cabinet
For her entrepreneurial approach and scientific discoveries, UNC Charlotte distinguished cancer researcher Pinku Mukherjee has received the “Charlotte International Cabinet Patrick McCrory International Entrepreneur Award.”
As the Irwin Belk Endowed Professor of Cancer Research at UNC Charlotte, Mukherjee is transforming the ways in which cancer is diagnosed and treated. She has designed innovative approaches to more accurately detect breast cancer early and is developing targeted therapy and imaging for pancreatic, ovarian and colon cancers.
Charlotte Symphony ensemble performs ‘Flash of the Classics’
A large crowd gathered Friday, May 6, at the gazebo in the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens to listen to a musical interlude by a five-piece ensemble from the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
The mini-concert, presented by the symphony in partnership with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, was made possible through a gift from an anonymous donor in memory of University founder Bonnie Cone.
