David Landrum and James Williams are the most recent UNC Charlotte employees to be recognized with the Governor’s Award for Excellence, the highest honor bestowed a state employee.

Landrum, an office manager in the Communication Studies Department, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, was honored in the category of public service. For eight years, Landrum has worked as a mentor to a student in the Gaston County School system. 

UNC Charlotte’s “Zero Waste Initiative” for Richardson Stadium was named the 2014 Wells Fargo Green Award winner at the annual Charlotte Chamber Energy Summit. The University was recognized in the large business category for “its impressive efforts” to eliminate waste in the 16,000-seat stadium.

The 2014 Wells Fargo Green Awards are presented to “member companies who have incorporated innovative, sustainable practices in the products they produce, the services they provide and within the culture of their company.”

UNC Charlotte has earned the inaugural Smart Fleet Champion Award from the N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center and the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The honor is the program’s highest level and is given in recognition of vehicle fleet efforts to reduce petroleum use and carbon dioxide and other “harmful” emissions. It was presented recently at the first Southeast Alternative Fuels Conference in Raleigh.

Phil Jones, associate vice chancellor for facilities, will be the guest on the Oct. 30 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. He will discuss the University’s growth during the past 10 years and current renovations under way.

Employees can watch “The Live Wire” at their desks or on their mobile devices starting at 2 p.m..

Faculty, staff and students can enjoy the fall weather while assisting with this semester’s campus cleanup, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22. As part of this effort, tree banding to protect against canker worms will be from 10 a.m. to noon.

The city of Charlotte will celebrate its third Minority Economic Development Week, starting Monday, Oct. 13, and UNC Charlotte will participate in the event.

The University will share event sponsorship with several locally based government agencies and building contractors that are committed to providing streamlined opportunities for minority-owned businesses in Charlotte’s growing economy.

The CATS Blue Line Extension project, managed by the City of Charlotte Public Transportation Department, continues around campus and toward Center City. Recently, preparations for the light rail to swing onto campus have begun.

Trees across from Miltimore Hall are being removed to accommodate rail tracks and the station that will serve the University community, when it opens in mid-2017 (based upon the current construction schedule).

Once the campus station opens, University leaders anticipate re-planting trees where possible, without obstructing the rail lines.

The Charlotte 49ers football team is into its second season, which means for home games in Richardson Stadium, the focus is on zero waste.
Last year’s efforts resulted in new initiatives for 2014, according to Brad Green, director of catering and special services for Chartwells, the University’s contracted food vendor.

The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to replace the Mallard Creek bridges on U.S. Hwy 29/N.Tryon Street, which will affect traffic around the UNC Charlotte campus for the duration of the approximate 15-month project.
According to the latest information, construction will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 15, weather permitting. The first phase will close the southbound lanes of N. Tryon Street (U.S. Hwy 29) for around seven months (through May 2015). During this time, motorists will be detoured along Mallard Creek Church Road, I-85 and Harris Boulevard.

UNC Charlotte is the recipient of the inaugural Air Compliance Excellence Award from the Mecklenburg County Air Quality (MCAQ); the honor is for local industry air quality permit compliance, pollution reduction and air quality improvement.
