Celebrate Earth Month with UNC Charlotte
April is Earth Month, and UNC Charlotte’s Office of Sustainability has published a listing of campus and community events to celebrate.
Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate in Charlotte traditions such as the annual tree planting, campus cleanup, the Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale and student garden day. New events this year include a clothing repair workshop, a cooking demonstration and an architecture colloquia. And don’t miss the Earth Day Festival, Wednesday, April 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Belk Plaza.
Meet Shannon Homesley
As executive assistant to the provost, no two days are the same for Shannon Homesley ’15, who is serving as an faculty/staff ambassador for this year’s #NinerNationGives campaign. Homesley does everything from managing Provost Bertone’s calendar to planning and running events and facilitating projects.
Mesahn needs shared leave
Edna Mesahn, housing and residence life, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through April 10.

Renee Drewery, Popp Martin Student Union, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through April 6.

Staff Council recognizes winners of recent cookoff
Earlier this month, the UNC Charlotte Staff Council held its annual Chili, Soup and Cornbread Cook-off.
First place winner for Best Chili or Soup was Shayauna Newsom, Office of Transition and Success Initiatives. Sharon Scarborough, urbanCore, and Rusti Deal, facilities management, placed second and third, respectively
Scarborough won the Best Cornbread contest, with Dannie Mirovich, PaTS in second.

Charlotte to host UNC System Learning and Technology Symposium
The UNC System Learning and Technology Symposium is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 13-14, at The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City.
This two-day event is designed to showcase innovative and effective instructional practices occurring at UNC System institutions. Conference sessions will focus on course design; diversity, equity and inclusion; innovation technologies and learning spaces; learning professionals as researchers; open educational resources and pedagogy and open access scholarship; and supporting student engagement and success.
Meet Charleata Neal
Charleata Neal is the facilities management director of human resources and has been a Niner for almost six years. Neal, a Woodbridge, Virginia, native was involved in women’s basketball during college, and through sports, she discovered valuable lessons. Learn about Neal’s role, her family history in professional and college sports and who inspires her the most.
Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?
Whitaker named CLAS interim divisional dean for social sciences and humanities departments
Beth Whitaker, a professor of political science, is interim divisional dean within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Whitaker began her duties March 15 and will continue in the role through June 30, 2023. She currently serves as executive director of the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies and will continue her duties in that role.
Bernadette Donovan-Merkert, director of the Nanoscale Science Doctoral Program, was appointed as interim divisional dean for Sciences and Math for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in January 2023.
Deadline extended for the 2023 Staff Employee of the Year award
The deadline for nominations for the annual Staff Employee of the Year awards has been extended to 5 p.m., Friday, March 17. Each year, UNC Charlotte recognizes exceptional employees for their contributions to our campus and beyond.
Any permanent employee of UNC Charlotte can submit a nomination, and employees are encouraged to recommend colleagues for this honor.
