LaDuke named 2013 Kulwicki Scholar

The Lee College of Engineering has awarded its Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to Justin LaDuke. A formal presentation will be made Friday, Oct. 11, at Charlotte Motor Speedway prior to the Dollar General 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

Vote for UrbanEden in Solar Decathlon

UNC Charlotte’s entry for the 2013 Solar Decathlon, UrbanEden, is on display in Irvine, Calif. The University is one of 20 academic teams from around the world competing in the U.S. Department of Energy contest.
The Solar Decathlon features a series of 10 contests for each team, tasked with building a solar-powered house that incorporates energy-efficient construction and appliances as well as renewable energy systems.

Engineering’s Stinson wins ‘Race to the Beach’

Kile Stinson, Motorsports Lab manager in the Lee College of Engineering, was the grand prize winner in the N.C. Air Awareness’ “Race to the Beach.” He won a weekend trip to Wrightsville Beach and paddle board lessons at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort.
This summer, UNC Charlotte employees had the chance to participate in the “Race to the Beach” through the University’s IDEAS Center. The race was an incentive to combat high ozone levels during the summer months.

Talk to focus on Lean Six Sigma and legal process

Kevin Divine, chief information officer for the Hunoval Law Firm, will discuss “Lean Six Sigma in Legal Business Processes” at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 30, in the Cameron Applied Research Center, Room 101. The talk is part of the Industrial and Technology Management Seminars sponsored by the Lee College of Engineering’s Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.

University now has five researchers named fellows by international academy

Election into the International Academy for Production Engineering, or CIRP, is a very exclusive honor.  The total number of fellows worldwide is limited to 175 with a maximum of 20 per country.
Currently, there are a total of 15 fellows from the United States and five are faculty members at UNC Charlotte.  By comparison, major engineering schools like MIT, Berkeley and Purdue have one fellow.

Engineering professor’s research on endangered species recognized

UNC Charlotte is among the ranks of prestigious universities such  as Georgia Tech and Boston University to make a Top 10 list of colleges and universities that focus on innovative and effective ways to preserve the world’s endangered animals.

Ingersoll Rand lending a hand on UrbanEden

The College of Arts + Architecture hosted more than 20 engineers and executives from Ingersoll Rand, Wednesday, June 26, to assist in building the Solar Decathlon house UrbanEden. The Ingersoll Rand guests helped pour geopolymer tiles that will be used in the structure’s rain catchment troughs.

IDEAS Center to hold third BioEnergy Symposium

The UNC Charlotte IDEAS Center will hold its third annual BioEnergy Symposium on Tuesday, April 9, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.
This year, the symposium will focus on anaerobic technologies, considered a source of renewable energy as anaerobic digestion can produce a biogas. Mel Kurtz, president of quasar energy group, one of the nation’s industry leaders in creating affordable renewable energy by providing businesses with sustainable waste management strategies, will be the featured speaker during the opening session.

LabVIEW tour bus to visit UNC Charlotte

The National Instruments LabVIEW Campus Tour will come to campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, in front of the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center.
National Instruments is a company that has equipped engineers and scientists with “tools that accelerate productivity, innovation and discovery,” according to its corporate website.
The LabVIEW tour bus travels to universities and colleges across the United States and Canada to showcase the latest NI hardware and software solutions for measurement, control, embedded, and communications applications.

UNC Charlotte partners with local law firm for Lean Six Sigma Training

Incorporating Lean Six Sigma management methodology is relatively unknown in the legal world, but technology-driven Hunoval Law Firm in Charlotte is raising the bar.
Partnering with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Center for Lean Logistics and Engineered Systems, Hunoval Law is offering Lean Six Sigma training to its employees and has already incorporated its strategy into key business processes.
