Lee College of Engineering recognizes teaching excellence

Courtney Green and Andrew Wills are the 2018 recipients of the Lee College of Engineering Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Awards of Excellence, respectively.

Green, a lecturer and advisor in the Engineering Technology and Construction Management Department (ETCM), joined the University in January 2015. Since then, she has taught nine different undergraduate courses to students from all five academic programs within ETCM, ranging from the freshman to the junior level.

Her teaching philosophy continues to evolve with practice and with experience.

Tapper needs shared leave

Nataly Tapper, Lee College of Engineering, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Feb. 14.

University’s online engineering master’s degree ‘one of the best’

OnlineMasters.com recently named UNC Charlotte’s online master’s degree in engineering management as one of the best for 2019.

According to OnlineMasters.com, the University’s program earned accolades for “best admissions,” too. The website noted that with three start dates, students can enroll in the program at their convenience.

Engineering team wins ASPE Student Challenge

A team of mechanical engineering graduate students from UNC Charlotte’s precision engineering program won the student challenge competition at the American Society for Precision Engineering’s (ASPE) 33rd annual conference in Las Vegas.

New grant to support military veterans’ graduate studies

UNC Charlotte has received a $750,000 grant to help attract and support military veterans in earning graduate degrees in STEM disciplines, with particular emphasis on advanced degrees in mechanical engineering.

NSF grant to fund engineering scholarships

UNC Charlotte was awarded a $999,591 grant from the National Science Foundation to support high-achieving, low-income engineering students as part of the NSF’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program.

The UNC Charlotte program, Engineering Academic Pathways, includes scholarship funds and programming to promote success among low-income students. Applications for the scholarships are being accepted, and the first awards will be made for fall 2019.

EPIC seminar to focus on airborne wind energy

Rob Creighton, president and CEO of Windlift, based in Raleigh, will talk about airborne wind energy at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, in EPIC, G287.

Lee College professor receives national manufacturing award

Scott Smith, professor and chair of the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Department, has received the William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Engineering professor elected to leadership position in international organization

The members of IEEE-USA, an organizational unit of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, have elected Jim Conrad of the William States Lee College of Engineering to serve as president for 2020. Conrad, a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, will serve as president-elect in 2019.

BigDEAL energy forecasting competition attracting international interest

Students in the course Energy Analytics have been competing very successfully in international energy forecasting competitions for a number of years. This fall, the course instructor decided the Lee College of Engineering would host a competition of its own, and 142 data scientists from 26 countries have formed 81 teams for the first UNC Charlotte BigDEAL Forecasting Competition 2018.
