Staff members from UNC Charlotte are working with community partners to soften the disruption for students whose off-campus apartments near the University will be delayed.
Several new high-end apartment complexes designed specifically for UNC Charlotte students are running behind schedule, with most of them able to accommodate only a portion of the 1,500 students who have leases. Most of those students had expected to move in around Friday, Aug. 15, but construction delays have pushed back move-in for many by up to three weeks.

The UNC Campus Security Initiative report that was provided Thursday, July 31, to the UNC Board of Governors by President Tom Ross was developed by a team of individuals focused on different aspects of safety from each of the 17 campuses.  UNC Charlotte was actively engaged in developing the report, which will be blueprint for the University system to further strengthen its protection of our students.  The entire report is online.

UNC Charlotte police, business continuity, communication, and facilities personnel will participate in a limited, emergency response simulation on campus Wednesday, Aug. 6. The activity is another example of the University working closely with local first responders to enhance campus safety and security.

UNC Charlotte is joining with Classroom Central, Communities in Schools and WSOC-TV for the 18th annual School Tools Campaign.
School Tools is a drive to collect and distribute school supplies to children who need them. All supplies collected will be distributed through Classroom Central, a free store for teachers and Communities in Schools site coordinators.
Classroom Central gives area teachers an opportunity to shop for donated school supplies for their students, many of them live in poverty and would start the school year unequipped otherwise.

Members of the campus community may notice an email request to participate in a survey from Mind Over Media, a Pittsburgh-based communications consultant firm.
This is a legitimate project and participation in the survey would be much appreciated, according to Stephen Ward, executive director of University communications.
“For better or worse, we need to ask for faculty and staff participation via email, we appreciate sensitivity to email security, and the good news, in this case, is that this one is for real,” Ward said.

Graduate certificate programs can provide individuals with an important educational credential in a focused area of study, and the University is seeking to increase program visibility through a new mini-marketing campaign.
“A graduate or post-master’s certificate enables individuals to obtain specialized training in a particular academic or occupational area that can help advance their careers,” said Karla Stanchina, manager of communications for the Graduate School.

A quarterly publication, UNC Charlotte magazine features stories of interest to alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the University.

Jeanette Sims, director of community affairs, will be a guest on the Nov. 19 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. She will talk about the many ways UNC Charlotte is engaged in the Charlotte area, and how the University community’s involvement in the larger region is becoming more important.

Today’s “The Live Wire,” airing at 2 p.m., will feature Lt. Brian Thomas from the Department of Police and Public Safety who will discuss the University’s evacuation plans and what the campus community needs to know about emergency preparedness.
