This new installment of “The Shared Table” continues the tradition begun last fall, highlighting recipes that reflect the cultures, families and memories of our community. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation this July 4, these dishes showcase the flavors and histories that make Niner Nation vibrant and connected.

How food shapes America’s 250 years of community

For 250 years, American families and communities have shared recipes, prepared meals and passed along traditions that tell the stories of who they are and where they come from. Ashli Stokes, interim department chair of Writing, Rhetoric and Digital Studies and professor of communication studies, discusses how identity is communicated through the practices surrounding food and eating. 

A piece of history in Atkins Library

As part of America’s 250th anniversary, Atkins Library is displaying an exhibit on how Charlotte earned its reputation as a “hornet’s nest of rebellion” during the American Revolution. According to local lore, British General Charles Cornwallis bitterly described the city in this way after his troops faced unexpectedly fierce resistance.
