DACA event to offer information, legal consultation
Immigrant Justice Program attorneys with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy will host a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) information session and legal Q&A for DACA recipients, educators and allies on Thursday, Oct. 26.
At 6 p.m., there will be an information session to discuss the recent movement to end DACA; an individual, general legal Q&A will be at 7 p.m. Both will be in the Popp Martin Student Union Movie Theater.
“The goal (of this event) is to provide support and resources to members of our community that are impacted by the federal repeal of the DACA program,” said Christine Davis, dean of students at UNC Charlotte. “In addition, the program aims to help educate and share strategies for citizens regarding how to be allies to immigrant and undocumented communities.”
Attorneys Lisa Diefenderfer and Maureen Abell from the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy will facilitate the Oct. 26 session. The Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy is a local organization that has worked for 50 years to pursue justice for those in need within the Charlotte area. The goal of the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy is to create a community, where its citizens are treated equally and have access to legal representation.
At UNC Charlotte, the Dean of Students Office serves as a primary point of contact for students impacted by the DACA repeal who have questions about on-campus and community support as they continue their education and contributions to the campus community. Information about DACA resources are available on the Dean of Students Office website, and continued collaborations are planned with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and other community agencies.
Contributors for this event include the Dean of Students Office, Multicultural Resource Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Government Association, Latinx/Hispanic Faculty and Staff Caucus, and We Come in Peace student organization.
