Honoring Veterans All Week

UNC Charlotte’s Military and Veteran Services is celebrating Veterans Week through Friday, Nov. 15. To celebrate these valued members of our community, here are the events taking place this week

  • Support ROTC Crowdfunding: The cadets of Air Force ROTC Detachment 592 have nearly reached their fundraising goal to support their Dining Out Ceremony. Help put them over the top

Meet Kat Morris

Kat Morris, a junior communications studies major, served four years in the U.S. Army as a medic. Learn about her service experience, her long path to UNC Charlotte after leaving the military and her passionate pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.

Did You Know? UNC Charlotte was founded in 1946 to support veterans returning home to the Charlotte area after World War II. 

  • North Carolina opened 14 evening college centers across the state including the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina, which provided night classes to 278 students at the city’s Central High School.
  • Happy Anniversary Veterans Park: Five years ago today, UNC Charlotte’s Veterans Park officially opened. Located beside Memorial Hall, it honors past and present community members who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Niner Nation Week is Underway

UNC Charlotte is ready to celebrate Niner Nation Week: Homecoming 2024 through Nov. 17. This year, it’s bigger than ever with a special emphasis on building connections and celebrating as a campus community.

How UNC Charlotte became the 49ers

Can’t Miss Events (Faculty and Staff): 

  • ACE Awards: The 2024 49er ACE Awards and Appreciation Lunch, hosted by the 49er Alumni Campus Employees Network, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11.
  • Uptown Celebration: Visit Founders Hall, in the heart of Charlotte, from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, for free lunch, live music, giveaways and a high-energy gathering that sets the tone for the rest of Niner Nation Week. 
  • Armored Cow Brewing Co. Social: Don’t miss out on a special faculty/staff social from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Armored Cow Brewing! Connect with colleagues, enjoy local brews and show your Niner pride to celebrate Niner Nation Week.
  • B&N Pre-Game Event: Visit Barnes & Noble Charlotte in the Popp Martin Student Union from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, for a pre-game football event! Enjoy giveaways, games, a photobooth and DIY gameday buttons!

Can’t Miss Events (Students):

  • Paint the Campus Green: Help blanket the campus in green, today, Monday, Nov. 11, to kick off Niner Nation Week! Grab some spray chalk and stencils from the Center for Student Involvement and get creative.
  • Scavenger Hunt: Join the fun on your own or with a team to complete mini-challenges, answer trivia and visit landmarks through Friday, Nov. 15!
  • Campus Carnival: The Homecoming Carnival will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, in the CHHS/CoEd Plaza. Celebrate Homecoming with carnival games, inflatables, food, music and more!  
  • B&N Pre-Game Event: Visit Barnes & Noble Charlotte in the Popp Martin Student Union from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, for a pre-game football event! Enjoy giveaways, games, a photobooth and DIY gameday buttons!

Additional News, Events and announcements: Faculty and Staff

  • CATS Network Upgrades: The Charlotte Area Transit System will perform network upgrades at ticket vending machines from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the University Blvd Station. During that time only cash will be accepted. Faculty, staff and students with CATS All-Access Passes will not be impacted.
  • AI Webinar: Join the UNC System Generative AI faculty learning community and register for a webinar on evaluating and using AI tools in academic work hosted by Siobahn Day Grady, 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 22. 
  • Community Service Craft-Making Day: Staff Council Staff Engagement Committee will host a Community Service Craft-Making Day from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Cone University Center, Room 112. Staff Council will provide supplies to make bracelets, necklaces, key rings or key chains, pins and greeting cards.
  • Donation Drive for Western North Carolina: Staff Council is hosting a donation drive for Western North Carolina starting Monday, Nov. 18, through Sunday, Dec. 15. There will be several donation drop locations across campus.
  • Novant Health on Campus: The Novant Health Breast Center Mobile Unit will be at UNC Charlotte Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center North Parking Lot. Appointments for mammograms begin at 9 a.m.; call (704) 384-7226 to schedule.

What You Need to Know: Students

  • Calling December Graduates: The next Destination Survey is now live. Your participation will help maintain the University’s accreditation status; provide the Career Center with information to enhance programming; and provide information on employment trends, outcomes and more.
  • MHFA Training: Attend a Mental Health First Aid training, a national program that teaches skills to respond to someone struggling with distress or suicide ideation. Register now for a virtual student training from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, and Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Voting is open to select the Golden Niner from among the Niner 9! The Niner 9 represent the best of the University community and bring campus to life with their energy, school pride and dedication to Niner Nation. Voting ends Wednesday, Nov. 13, and the winner will be announced at the Homecoming Game Saturday, Nov. 16.
