Edward Stokes ’81, ’84 M.S.E., a professor of electrical and computer engineering in the William States Lee College of Engineering, died Saturday, Aug. 21.Stokes, who earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and mechanical engineering and engineering science and a master’s in mechanical engineering and engineering science from UNC Charlotte, completed a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Robert Holmes Jr., an architectural technician with the Office of Business Services, recently earned the credential, Certified Educational Facilities Professional, from the APPA (formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators). The credential demonstrates his mastery of professional expertise and understanding related to educational facilities management.

Cortni Schenker, an employee with UNC Charlotte’s Office of OneIT, died Friday, Aug. 20. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 23, at Benton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church, 109 E. Lawyers Rd. Monroe, North Carolina.Schenker, a graduate of Appalachian State University, was an IT Service Desk analyst for more than 16 years and was known for her expertise with Service Desk Banner.

DANCE! DISCOVER! LEARN! PLAY! and GO! through hands-on activities that stimulate their minds while having fun.The festival, the only one of its kind and scale in the Charlotte region, will take place at UNC Charlotte from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9.

As a result of unforeseen personal circumstances, Brian Trent will not assume his duties as the new vice chancellor for business affairs (VCBA) at UNC Charlotte effective Aug. 30. He informed Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber of his decision this week. “I want Niner Nation to know how much I appreciate everyone who made me feel at home during my visits to campus and who had already reached out to welcome me to my new role, ” said Trent. “This was my dream job, but right now, the needs of my family must come first.”  

Richard Steele, associate vice chancellor for business services, was appointed interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management effective Thursday, Aug. 12. This will be a long-term assignment to ensure stability during leadership transitions. At this time, the University will not actively recruit for the associate vice chancellor for facilities management position. 

As part of its initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the UNC Charlotte Department of Police and Public Safety (PPS) Communications Center must undergo an assessment. This is the Communications Center’s first review cycle; an assessment will follow every four years.As part of this process, interested parties can provide feedback to the accreditors. A call-in session with CALEA representatives is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 9. Call 704-687-8300 to be connected with an assessor.

Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber reaffirmed the University’s commitment to climate action by re-signing the Carbon Commitment, one of the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments maintained by Second Nature. The Carbon Commitment was first signed in 2009 by Chancellor Emeritus Philip L. Dubois.
