Nominations sought for de Silva Award
The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2020 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. Recognizing the full-time member of the graduate faculty who demonstrates outstanding graduate mentoring, nominations should come from a chair of the academic department.
UNC BOG approves paid parental leave benefit
The UNC Board of Governors approved a Paid Parental Leave program during its meeting Friday, Sept. 20. This program will provide eight weeks of fully paid parental leave to eligible employees who have given birth to a child and four weeks of paid leave for non-birth parents in circumstances involving the birth of a child or the adoption, foster placement or other legal placement of a child with an eligible state employee.
Call for nominations for O. Max Gardner Award
Potential faculty nominees for the 2019-20 O. Max Gardner Award are being sought. This award is given annually by the UNC Board of Governors to “that member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina who, during the current scholastic year, has made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race.”Nominees can be of any rank, “including instructors, engaged in teaching in any unit, institution or branch of service” in the UNC System. UNC Charlotte faculty members who have won the award include Pinku Mukherjee and Diane Browder.
2019 Chancellor’s Reception scheduled
The Chancellor’s Reception, an annual staff recognition event, will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Popp Martin Student Union Multipurpose Room. Hosted by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, this event provides employees an opportunity to socialize and network with colleagues. Light refreshments will be served; raffle tickets will be distributed at the door giving attendees the chance to win Niner prizes.
Apply to be commencement speakers, bell ringers
The Dean of Students Office is seeking student speakers and bell ringers for UNC Charlotte’s Fall Commencement ceremonies (Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-15). Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these prestigious honors.
Education professor receives first Reynolds Leadership Award
Florence Martin is the inaugural recipient of the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for excellence in graduate program administration.She is a professor in Learning, Design and Technology, graduate program director of the Post-Master’s Certificate of University and College Teaching and program coordinator of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Learning, Design and Technology.

The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2020 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. This honor, awarded since 1988, recognizes outstanding scholarship, creativity and/or research among senior full-time faculty members. Nominations may come from any UNC Charlotte faculty member.
Survey participants sought for University area thoroughfare study
UNC Charlotte, University City Partners, Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are conducting a University Area Thoroughfares Study in order to improve access and safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles that may enter and exit UNC Charlotte’s main campus. The study is in the initial public involvement phase that includes a survey, in which all University stakeholders (faculty, staff, students and visitors) are encouraged to participate.
