Working from home this spring, in his position as senior research administrator of invoicing in Grants and Contracts Administration at UNC Charlotte, Zack Tarlton ’13 started playing piano during his lunch hour. While his academic training is in architecture, Tarlton has a long history in musical theatre.“I basically grew up at Matthews Playhouse,” he said. As a student at UNC Charlotte, he managed to sneak away from his desk in Storrs to perform in the Department of Theatre production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Chance Lewis received a Spencer Mentor Award that includes a $10,000 grant for his contributions to enriching the lives, research and careers of his students and junior colleagues and enhancing the field of education research.This national award is provided by the Spencer Foundation, an organization that is focused exclusively on supporting education research.

The North Carolina General Assembly completes first COVID-19 session.

Students in Professor Heather Freeman’s animation class have created short animated videos that encourage personal hygiene to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The students’ advice was drawn directly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and addresses topics such as proper hand washing, maintaining six feet of distance, disinfecting surfaces and caring for someone who is sick.

UNC Charlotte celebrated the Class of 2020 in style, albeit not in the traditional way. More than 200 graduates and members of families, faculty and staff who responded to an invitation to submit videos expressing favorite memories, pride in accomplishment and well wishes for the future.

Maria Cruzat, who is majoring in Public Health, International Studies and Spanish, is the 2020 recipient of the International Education Student Award, given by the Office of International Programs. She is a Levine Scholar, Global Engagement Scholar and a UNC Charlotte American Mock World Health Organization co-founder.

Twenty-one young leaders from across the United States have been selected as the 11th class of UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program, the University’s most prestigious merit-based scholarship.
