UNC Charlotte’s Voices of Eden Gospel Choir shares gift of music
The student group Voices of Eden Gospel Choir recently completed its spring semester tour with concerts in Winston-Salem and Greenville, N.C., and Richmond, Norfolk and Suffolk, Va. The group will be featured in concert at Mission Gathering Charlotte at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 10.
In Richmond, the choir sang at a nursing home and visited with residents; the performance was part of its established tradition to uplift the campus and community through sharing its gift of music.
‘Set No Limits’ performance to celebrate contemporary female composers
The Department of Music will celebrate the music of women composers on Thursday, April 21, with “Set No Limits,” a free concert at UNC Charlotte Center City at 7:30 p.m. Developed by Assistant Professor of Clarinet Jessica Lindsey, the program will present music by eight composers, performed by Lindsey and guest artists Christian Bohnenstengel, piano, and Christy Banks, clarinet. Funded in part by a Chancellor’s Diversity Grant, the concert is free and open to the public.
Faculty and Friends Concert to feature distinguished professor of violin
The Department of Music will present the final concert in the 2015-16 Faculty and Friends Concert Series at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, in Rowe Recital Hall. The concert features Anne R. Belk Distinguished Professor of Violin David Russell with guest pianist Kyle Linscheid.
Spring Plant Sale scheduled, Botanical Gardens to hold info sessions
The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, at the McMillan Greenhouse.
Prior to the public sale, on Thursday, April 14, join Paula Gross, assistant director for the Botanical Gardens, for “Tips and Best Bets for the Novice Gardener.” Two offerings of this free information session will be presented at 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. in the McMillan Greenhouse Classroom. Prospective attendees should register online.
CCI earns Blue Diamond Award
The College of Computing and Informatics recently received a Blue Diamond Award for being a top producer of IT talent.
CCI, nominated in the category of human capital, was honored for its Business Partners Program.
The Blue Diamond Awards are sponsored by CA Technologies, a Charlotte-based company that creates software that fuels transformation for global companies and enables them to seize opportunities of the application economy.
Belk Plaza conceptual plan to be revealed April 11
The final Belk Plaza forum will be 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, April 11, in the Cone University Center. At this event, there will be a short presentation by key members of the LandDesign team to reveal the conceptual plan for the plaza’s transformation.
Exceptional role models recognized at International Women’s Day
Offering odes to strong women who inspired them was a common thread by speakers at the recent International Women’s Day program held in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
An annual event, International Women’s Day “acknowledges that our campus community is filled with local women who embody the richness of internationalism, and we would like to recognize these individuals for their contributions to UNC Charlotte and the world,” said Roslyn Lewis, communications coordinator in the Office of International Programs.
Halton Arena bears name of long-time benefactor
The Dale F. Halton Arena opened Dec. 2, 1996, as a state-of-the-art facility intended to showcase sporting events and major functions. It honors a generous University supporter whose name also graces a reading room in Atkins Library and the tennis complex.
Halton is the granddaughter of Henry Barksdale Fowler, the founder of Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Charlotte, which was established in 1905 as the nation’s first Pepsi franchise. At the time, Charlotte had a population of about 15,000.
Spring Dance Concert features work by Tony Award winner George Faison
The Department of Dance will present a Spring Concert Thursday through Sunday, April 14-17, in the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. Among the works on the program is “Suite Otis,” choreographed by the Tony Award-winning choreographer George Faison.
University to host screening of documentary ‘Creative Abundance’
“Creative Abundance” is a documentary that examines services in place for individuals with developmental disabilities, usually in the form of vocational and rehabilitative workshops that often are sheltered from the public eye and from community interaction.
UNC Charlotte will host a free screening of the film at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
