Two Charlotte 49ers earn all-Conference USA honors

Charlotte 49ers red-shirt junior nose tackle Larry Ogunjobi and junior running back Kalif Phillips are the first football players in 49ers history to earn all-conference honors; they were named to the 2015 all-Conference USA Second Team.

“It’s a good honor for them individually and for us as a program, as we take the next step” said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert. “These are two guys that have been here since our first season in 2013, and they’ve worked extremely hard and put themselves in position to be successful. They’re both humble guys who show up and work every day.”

Faculty receive ASC regional artist grants

Four faculty members in the College of Arts + Architecture have received 2016 regional artist project grants from the Arts & Science Council (ASC).

John Allemeier, associate professor of composition, received a $2,000 grant to support the professional recording of new music. Will Campbell, associate professor of saxophone and director of the jazz studies program, received a $1,716 award to study with the jazz saxophonist Tim Armacost in New York City.

First Ward Park officially opens

Charlotte has a new public gem in its crown with the formal dedication of the county’s First Ward Park. Located between East Seventh and Ninth streets, the four-acre park links UNC Charlotte Center City with ImaginOn as part of an educational and cultural district.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, along with other local officials and community leaders, attended the dedication ceremony hosted by the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. Throughout the day, park attendees could listen to music and receive a tour.

Recent grad publishes book profiling American workers

“The American Workday” is a publication that presents a modern portrait of the nation’s economy, as painted by the workers who keep it moving.  Its publication is a result of efforts by UNC Charlotte alumnus Austin Halbert.

A Levine Scholar, Halbert graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in management (organizational management concentration) with a minor in economics. “The American Workday” was funded through a grant from the Levine Scholars Program, which enabled Halbert and fellow scholars Laura Outlaw and Vrushab Gowda to complete the work.

Botanical Gardens director to appear on Dec. 11 ‘Live Wire’

Jeff Gillman, director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will be the guest on the Dec. 11 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at noon, he will share insights into all that the Botanical Gardens has to offer and what’s ahead for this community treasure. 

Aruba Networks to deliver improved Wi-Fi connectivity

The entire campus community will soon notice improved Wi-Fi connectivity as a result of the University’s new wireless vendor, Aruba Networks and the company’s new “Wave 2” access point technology.

Mike Carlin, vice chancellor for information technology and CIO for the University, along with other ITS leaders, carefully vetted different wireless solutions to select the most appropriate option for the state’s urban research institution.

UNC Charlotte trustees endorse Connect NC bonds plan

At its Dec. 3 meeting, UNC Charlotte’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a resolution in support of the $2 billion Connect NC bond package.

North Carolina voters will consider the bond package on March 15, 2016.

If voters approve the bond package, UNC system schools will receive $980 million to build classroom buildings and make repairs. The state’s 58 community colleges will share $350 million. The bond also supports projects in agriculture, public safety, the National Guard, state parks and water and sewer lines.

Extra holiday discount at bookstores

Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte in the Student Union and the UNC Charlotte Center City Campus Shop will offer faculty and staff members the chance to purchase merchandise and receive an extra 10 percent discount on top of the 20 percent faculty and staff already receive.

The holiday sale at Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte’s is Wednesday, Dec. 9; the faculty/staff sale day at UNC Charlotte Center City Campus Shop is Thursday, Dec. 17.

Haas Foundation funds scholarship gift

UNC Charlotte is a leader in the field of advance machining engineering, and in support of the University’s efforts, the Gene Haas Foundation has donated $20,000 to the Lee College Department of Mechanical and Engineering Science Department for student scholarships.
