Beth Whitaker, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, is one of five finalists for the 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); its passage enacted federally mandated, wide-sweeping changes in employment, transportation, communication and education, especially at the post-secondary level.

Gena Smith, director of disability services at UNC Charlotte, considers the ADA the broadest civil rights legislation of the 20th century.

Tricia Turner, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology, will be a guest on the Sept. 17 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at 2 p.m., Thursday, she will discuss how ankle injuries, even “long-healed” ones, can change a person’s movement.

Monday, Sept. 21, is Faculty/Staff Night for the volleyball contest against the University of Texas at El Paso. Employees can pick up four free tickets at the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Ticket Office outside the Barnhardt Student Activity Center prior to the 6 p.m. game.

Julie Howell really likes calling North Carolina home, so much so, that she sought the opportunity to settle in the Tar Heel State about 16 years ago.

A native of Olathe, Kan., Howell retired from the telecommunications industry after a 26-year career in which she lived in several large cities.

Queen’s Table dedicated the sculpture “Ainsa III” by artist Jaume Plensa at UNC Charlotte Center City on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Created in Barcelona, Spain, by the world-renowned artist, the sculpture was commissioned especially for the site by Queen’s Table, an anonymous group that previously has donated six different sculptures to Charlotte’s public spaces during the past 30 years.

Florence Martin, an associate professor in the College of Education’s Instructional Systems Technology program, is a 2015 recipient of a Crystal Award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Division of Distance Learning.

The honor is for “an innovative and outstanding multimedia-based distance learning course or distance learning project,” according to the AECT. She will receive the Crystal Award formally during the 2015 AECT convention in Indianapolis on Nov. 6.

Mohamed Shehab, an associate professor in the Department of Software and Information Systems in the College of Computing and Informatics, is the fourth finalist for the 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence being featured on Inside UNC Charlotte. The recipient will be named during a special awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 18.

UNC Charlotte’s undergraduate business programs rank in the top 24 percent nationally, according to the 2016 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges.

UNC Charlotte’s undergraduate business programs are ranked No. 114 out of 478 schools, in a tie with 16 other business schools nationwide.

Across the state, UNC Charlotte ranks No. 4 out of 19 North Carolina schools  with accredited undergraduate business programs included in the ranking.
