Digital production librarian Rodney Freeman Jr. spends the workday archiving photos, films, documents and other materials that are within the collections of UNC Charlotte’s Atkins Library. In his free time, he is pursuing a passion project — a documentary focused on Black librarianship.
UNC Charlotte receives Library Excellence in Access and Diversity Award
UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library has received the 2024 Library Excellence in Access and Diversity Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine. The LEAD Award honors academic libraries’ programs and initiatives that encourage and support diversity, equity and inclusion across their campuses. These include, but are not limited to, research, technology, accessibility, exhibitions and community outreach.
Some campus telephones experiencing outages
OneIT has received numerous reports that on-campus Cisco phones are not receiving off-campus calls. This includes calls from the cell phones of on-campus students and employees. ‘Film Screen with a Dean’ to focus on racial injustice
A screening and discussion of “Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem” is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. The film provides historical context and examines America’s history of racist oppression in the criminal justice system.
This event is part of the “Film Screen with a Dean” series and is sponsored by Atkins Library and the Levine Museum of the New South, as part of its “What Is It Going to Take?” series.
Book club to discuss ‘Me and White Supremacy’
“Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla Saad is the latest selection for the Atkins Library Book Club; the library will hold a virtual discussion of the work from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26 via Google Meets.

Atkins Library schedules book sale
The J. Murrey Atkins Library is holding a book sale Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, in the Halton Reading Room.More than 5,000 duplicated and selected items will be on sale, including academic monographs, paperbacks, children’s literature, LPs, DVDs and more.The sale will be open to just the campus community from 9 a.m. to noon, Feb.28. Atkins Library book club to explore diversity/inclusion
The Atkins Library Diversity & Inclusion Committee is sponsoring a University-wide book club that will focus on diversity and cultural topics to spark conversations around inclusivity, equity and awareness of human differences in today’s society.The club, created at the recommendation of the provost, is open to all faculty, staff and students. Ryan Harris, head of research and instructional services, will facilitate the first discussion, scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, in the library’s Halton Reading Room.
