Levine Scholar receives national community service honor

Junior Sarah Whitmire is a Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow; the national honor recognizes individuals who are investing in their communities through service, research and advocacy.

As a Levine Scholar, Whitmire is working the UNC Charlotte faculty members, practitioners in the Carolinas Healthcare System and a group of women experiencing homelessness on a community-based research project.

N.C. Science Festival topic of April 2 ‘Live Wire’

Jonathan Frederick, director of the North Carolina Science Festival, and UNC Charlotte’s James Hathaway will be guests on the April 2 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. They will discuss the upcoming North Carolina Science Festival and the UNC Charlotte Science and Technology Expo.

Employees can watch “The Live Wire” at their desk or on their mobile devices starting at 2 p.m.

Exceptional graduate mentor Dena Shenk receives 2015 de Silva Award

Dena Shenk, professor of anthropology and graduate coordinator of the Gerontology Program, is the 2015 recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Award; the honor is presented annually to a faculty member who best exemplifies de Silva’s commitment to graduate students.

Colleagues regard Shenk as an exceptional graduate mentor who has had an influential impact on the Gerontology Program.

NBA great Mark Price to lead men’s basketball

Mark Price, an assistant coach with the Charlotte Hornets, was introduced as the Charlotte 49ers head men’s basketball coach Thursday.

 “I’m extremely excited about joining the Charlotte 49ers as the new basketball coach,” Price said. “I’m excited to get to know the current players as we move forward and start a new era. I’m looking forward to putting a team on the court that plays an exciting brand of basketball that our students and fans will enjoy watching.”

Register for 2015 Undergraduate Research Conference

Registration is open through Wednesday, April 1, for UNC Charlotte’s Undergraduate Research Conference (URC). The conference, now in its fourth year, is a campus-wide showcase of undergraduate research projects. Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, Atkins Library, Charlotte Research Institute and the Levine Scholars Program, the 2015 conference will take place Friday, April 24, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

UNC Charlotte team creates solar-responsive design material for national competition

A team of six UNC Charlotte students, led by faculty members Mona Azarbayjani from the School of Architecture and Michael Walter from the Department of Chemistry, will compete in the “People, Prosperity and Planet (P3) Student Design Competition for Sustainability” held by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Alexandria, Va., April 11-12.

Art auction to benefit Levine Children’s Hospital

“Patchwork Epiphany: Art Gallery and Silent Auction” will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 2, at UNC Charlotte Center City. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Levine’s Children Hospital.

Levine Scholar Noelle Cornelio is organizing the event, which is an outgrowth of a community engagement project that she began last year. She and other student volunteers started teaching art to Levine Children’s Hospital patients and their families. Last year, there was a gallery display featuring the works.

Witherspoon Lecture to take on religious freedom

Is it possible to define religion and enact laws regarding religious freedoms where there is no state-established religion? That question is the focus of UNC Charlotte’s 31st annual Loy Witherspoon Lecture in Religious Studies at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 2, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Guest lecturer Winnifred Fallers Sullivan will present the free, public presentation “The Impossibility of Religious Freedom.”
