PPS honor guard presents colors
The honor guard from UNC Charlotte’s Police and Public Safety Department presented the colors prior to the start of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games being played in Time Warner Cable Arena Friday, March 20; the games are being televised nationally.
Eight individuals honored for service, achievements
The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association honored eight individuals for embodying the core principles of the University and for distinguishing themselves through their outstanding service to UNC Charlotte, their chosen field and humanity.
The 2015 awards were presented at the Alumni Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 17, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
“All of our awardees have achieved so much, both personally and professionally, in their lives, and we are proud to have them as a part of our 49er family,” said UNC Charlotte Alumni Association President Deborah Pittman.
UNC Charlotte cosponsoring Southeast Venture Conference
The Southeast Venture Conference (SEVC) will hold, what is expected to be its largest-ever event, March 31 to April 1 in Charlotte through the backing and support of a trio of new title sponsors, Charlotte Regional Fund for Entrepreneurship (CRFE), UNC Charlotte and the city of Charlotte.
The Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) is being held concurrently with the Southeast Venture Conference.
UNC Charlotte to engage public with 13 N.C. Science Festival events
The 2015 North Carolina Science Festival, a statewide celebration of science and technology, is again offering cool things for the public to experience from April 10-26. With hundreds of events listed, it will be easier to find fun science going on in North Carolina than it will be to find azaleas in bloom.

‘Fighting Ebola in West Africa’ talk rescheduled for April 7
The free community conversation featuring a medical professional and Serving in Mission (SIM) missionaries originally planned for February has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
“Fighting Ebola in West Africa: The Charlotte Connection” will feature Debbie Eisenhut, a SIM surgeon with the ELWA Hospital in Liberia; Nancy Writebol, a SIM missionary and Ebola survivor; and her husband David Writebol, also a SIM missionary.
Healthy cooking demonstration scheduled
March is National Nutrition Month, and UNC Charlotte employees are invited to a demonstration of healthy cooking at 1 p.m., Monday, March 30, in Bistro 49, located on the second floor of the Student Union.
At the event, a healthy dish will be prepared; the demonstration will be tilapia with tomato emulsion, black quinoa with wild mushrooms, heirloom tomatoes and sautéed haricot verts. Free samples will be provided during the demo, and recipe cards will be available.
Faces – Elizabeth Lorenz
After a decade at Northern Kentucky University, Beth Lorenz decided to seek a new professional opportunity. The search led her to UNC Charlotte’s Office of Education Abroad, where she serves as assistant director.
It’s been about 15 months since Lorenz’s arrival in the Queen City, and she continues to explore her new home.
Public health leader to address partnerships between universities, communities
Al Richmond, executive director of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, will speak from 3 to 5 p.m.., Tuesday, March 24, in Cone University Center, Room 210.
Established in 1997, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) is a nonprofit membership organization that promotes health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and academic institutions.
