Five talks scheduled for annual Great Decisions lectures

The Great Decisions lecture series, a national program of the Foreign Policy Association, gives citizens the opportunity to meet, discuss and learn about some of the issues facing the world. 

Five lectures will be held in a hybrid format between Jan. 31 and Feb. 28; the talks will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The in-person lectures will be held at The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City, Room 201.

Counterterrorism expert to address ‘Is America Winning?’

Lt. Gen. Michael Nagata, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, will present “Is America Winning?” at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, as part of the spring 2020 International Speaker Series.Nagata assumed the position of director, Directorate of Strategic Operational Planning at the National Counterterrorism Center, on May 13, 2016. Previously, he was commander, Special Operations Command Central, a sub-unified command of the U.S. Central Command, from June 2013 to October 2015.

Queens University professor to give Great Decisions talk

Margaret Commins, an associate professor in the Political Science and Sociology Department at Queens University, is the second speaker of the 2020 Great Decisions Lecture Series.  Her free public presentation is set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29, at UNC Charlotte Center City.Commins will discuss Michael Shifter and Bruno Binetti’s article from the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions 2020 Briefing Book, “U.S. Relations with the Northern Triangle,” and bring in elements from her research to the presentation.

Climate change is topic for first 2020 Great Decisions lecture

Deborah Thomas, chair and professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, is the first speaker of the 2020 Great Decisions Lecture Series.Her free, public talk is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, at UNC Charlotte Center City. The talk will focus on Ronald Bee’s article, from the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions 2020 Briefing Book, “Climate Change and the Global Order.”

German official to speak about fall of Berlin Wall

Volker Wissing, chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and vice minister president of Rhineland- Palatinate, will present “The 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall: 1989—The End of History? Learning from History to Succeed in the Future” at 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, Salon A, as part of the 2019 International Speaker Series.

Italy’s economy subject of International Speaker Series

Pier Forlano, the consul general of Italy in Philadelphia, will discuss “The Fundamentals and Excellence of the Italian Economy” at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Popp-Martin Student Union Movie Theater.
