Student Affairs Division responds to displaced students
A weekend fire at an off-campus apartment complex resulted in no injuries, although some UNC Charlotte students are being displaced for repairs to their apartments. Departments within the Division for Student Affairs responded immediately, offering the displaced students optional housing on campus, counseling services and contacts with the American Red Cross. One office is coordinating collection of temporary supplies.
‘The Thistle & Shamrock’ radio host appointed a Member of the British Empire, received her start at UNC Charlotte
When she was a young exchange student from Scotland in the early 1980s, Fiona Ritchie volunteered at WFAE-FM during her time away from her duties as a teaching assistant in the Psychology Department at UNC Charlotte. At the time, the University held the license for the station.
Botanical Gardens to hold children’s workshop on carnivorous plants
The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens will offer “Bugs Beware! Carnivorous Plants of the Carolinas” Saturday, July 19.
Designed for children age 7 to 12, the workshop will focus on the what, why, where and how of carnivorous plants in the Carolinas. Prospective attendees can register for two options – a 90-minute session that includes a Venus fly-trap or the two-hour session that features hands-on construction of a 12-inch bog dish garden with Venus fly-trap, pitcher plant, sundew and bog moss.
Lambert adds graduate assistants to coaching staff
Charlotte 49ers football coach Brad Lambert has hired Stanley Arnoux, Scotty Braswell and Matt Woodlief as graduate assistants. The trio joins Aaron Curry, who was named to the staff as a graduate assistant in March.
University Career Center to launch Hire-A-Niner
The University Career Center soon will launch Hire-A-Niner, a new online system with a host of advanced features designed to connect UNC Charlotte students and alumni with employers.
Academic advising to offer summer workshops
The Office of Academic Services is offering free workshops during July for University advisors on a variety of topics. Prospective participants can complete an online form for session(s) they plan to attend.

State Labor Department recognizes UNC Charlotte with safety award
The N.C. Department of Labor recently bestowed its Silver Safety Achievement Award to the University for reducing injuries and providing a safe and healthy working, teaching and learning environment in 2013.
Darius Griffin, director of the Environmental Health & Safety Office, said the honor illustrates the campus community’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety at the University. “The leadership and dedication of UNC Charlotte employees has been essential in building and maintaining an awareness of safety on campus.”
Alumnus Kyle White – a hero among us
As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, it is an opportunity to remember veterans like Kyle White (’13). He is one of many returning military veterans who have advanced their futures at UNC Charlotte following his service to the nation. Providing veterans educational opportunities is in the University’s DNA, beginning with its post-World War II founding to serve vets under the GI Bill.
Criminal justice professor to discuss ‘Suicide by Cop’
Vivian Lord, a professor of criminal justice and criminology, will present “Suicide by Cop: Current Research and Implications for Law Enforcement Officers and Agencies” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at the Belk Action Center at the Charlotte Chamber.
In this presentation, part of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Faculty Speaker Series, Lord will discuss real-world tactics that have been used successfully to resolve suicide-by-cop situations.
