A partnership of the West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition, community and civic leaders, and researchers from UNC Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University is leading effort to develop the area’s first full-service food shopping experience in 30 years.

The “49ers” moniker has an interesting — and scrappy — origin.

Five members of UNC Charlotte’s faculty or staff have been named to Who’s Who in Black Charlotte. An entity of Real Times Media, Who’s Who in Black Charlotte documents the positive achievements of Black Charlotteans who are making outstanding contributions to the communities and organizations they serve. 

UNC Charlotte is gearing up for the biggest celebration of the year with gatherings, performances, spirit contests and more, all culminating with the signature Homecoming events.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion continues to respond to the expressed interests of students, faculty and staff to connect with ideas, discussions and learning opportunities surrounding issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion. This fall marks the launch of three voluntary series that feature the knowledge and input of UNC Charlotte faculty members as well as that of visiting experts.

“My biggest fear is that Reed will be forgotten,” Julie Parlier says of her son, her tattoo honoring his memory and signifying that she, of course, will never forget.

Shan Yan, professor and associate chair for research in the Department of Biological Sciences, is the 2023 recipient of the Education Award from the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society.

Yan was recognized for his long-standing dedication to educating and mentoring future generations of scientists in the field of environmental mutagenesis. He is an active member of the EMGS DNA Repair and Mutagenic Mechanism Special Interest Group and has served on several of the society’s committees including as current chair of the EMGS Publication Policy Committee.

By the time Marianne Lieberman ’75 came to UNC Charlotte to pursue a Bachelor of Creative Arts, she had already faced enough challenges, had enough adventures and endured enough traumas for three lifetimes. And not just because she was a student in her 40s among a cohort of 20-somethings.

Lieberman, who graduated in 1975, started life in 1927 in Vienna, Austria, as the daughter of a Jewish doctor, enjoying the opportunities of the educated upper middle class. But in 1938, that world was destroyed.

M. Lyn Exum and Deborah Beete are the 2023 recipients of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence and UNC Charlotte Award for Teaching Excellence, respectively.
