College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faculty members Dan Morrill and Kathy Reichs were among the eight individuals honored by the Arts & Science Council (ASC) recently in recognition of their impact on Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s cultural community.

The ASC and Charlotte Symphony partnered for ASC Honors during an evening celebration in the Knight Theater at Levine Center. ASC Honors, given every three years, recognize exceptionally creative individuals whose lifetime contributions have distinguished them and enriched the cultural and social history for Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

Morrill, professor in the Department of History who is on phased retirement, was honored in the history category. Reichs, a forensic anthropologist and author who is on leave from her position as a professor in the Department of Anthropology, was honored in the literature category.

"These faculty members who have been named among the ASC Honors recipients have contributed to our college, the University and the broader community in deep and sustainable ways," said Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. "We commend them for their scholarship, their commitment to service and their leadership."

In addition to Morrill and Reichs, other honorees are; Robert Corbin, science; Clara Jones, music; and Wesley Mancini, design. ASC Honors also recognizes lifetime achievement in teaching arts, science and history to students through the Cato Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Awards.  The 2012 recipients are Byron Baldwin, art; Andrew West, history; and Libby Withrow, science.

Each recipient received a bronze medallion by North Carolina artist Joanna Goldberg and a cash award.

“Our community is fortunate to have creative individuals who live, work and have made a significant impact in arts, science and history in our community,” said ASC President Scott Provancher.
