Music Department to stage two one-act operas

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

UNC Charlotte’s Opera Workshop and Chamber Orchestra will present two one-act operas Saturday, Feb. 2, through Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. Performances are at 7:30 p.m., except for Sunday, which is a 2 p.m. matinee.

The show will feature two-thirds of Giacomo Puccini’s “Il Trittico (The Tryptich).” In “Suor Angelica,” performers will tell the  tragic, moving story of a young nun, Sister Angelica, who had her illegitimate son taken from her at birth and was banished to a convent by her family. “Gianni Schicchi,” a comic opera based on an episode from Dante's “The Divine Comedy,” exposes the greed, conspiracy and overall dysfunction in a family fighting over the last will and testament of the recently deceased patriarch.

Students in the College of Arts + Architecture’s Music Department comprise the opera cast and chamber orchestra, under the direction of Brian Arreola, assistant professor of voice.

Tickets are $6, $4 for students and can be purchased at the Robinson Hall Box Office or online.
